he sees this chaos unfold from his comfortable perch in the trees of the shire or whatever, and has no real grasp of the toll that the fire is taking

Is it weird that on the one hand we dismiss preppers as paranoid nutjobs, but recognize climate change and resource depletion as real and disastrous?

In The Netherlands we have been living below sea level for centuries. It will be fine. Do not worry.

Serial Tickler Is Terrorizing Boston College Students
Police report at least 10 sightings of the so-called Tickler, who some in the neighborhood had long believed to be a myth. At least three students report having encountered him on the same night, April 7.
"This is no myth,” Sergeant Michael O’Hara said. “It’s happening.”

Maybe worthy of a news thread: the Indian election. Perhaps this implies a under-representation of Indian fans of Pearl Jam.
Unless I'm missing something, the general consensus is that Modi is a hopeful development, unless of course you happen to be a religious minority. Sikhs are over-represented in my area (perhaps in the US in general?) and those I have spoken to are pretty ambivalent.
An aside: I don't know if this is representative, but I did hear at least one Sikh bad-mouth Gandhi for failing to consider sectarian divisions in post-Imperial India. He very well may have had a point. A unified, India-Pakistan might have prevented the past 13 years of American engagement in that area.

It is a strange dichotomy, though I think it stems from the portrayal of preppers as being anti-social and unnecessarily suspicious of others before the disaster's even happened, and that some of the more vocal preppers seem more concerned about unlikely scenarios like zombies and the Rapture. Then again, maybe that's just more skewing of reality on the part of the media and general popular consensus. It could also very well be an unwillingness to admit that there is a very real threat to our collective existence, kind of like how many people have a hard time taking their mortality at face value.

As someone who is very ticklish, I could never be the tickler. I would empathize with my victims far too easily.
