This is going to be like that Joe Mauer double that gor called foul a few years ago. The rules were changed in the offseason. The dirty slide will not be allowed next year, I can guarantee it. Manfred is feelng the heat right now.

And they'll probably lean real hard on it as a player safety issue.

And that's exactly what it is!

I was sort of implying that it may not have happened if it didn't change the outcome of a nationally televised game, just like blocking the plate wasn't changed until a big star went down with an injury.

Exactly. That would have been the right call.

Thanks, fellas.

That was a pretty blatant balk, by the way.

It looked like he balked twice before the same pitch.

I've got no problems with that slide, it was late, it was hard, but he could touch the base. Thats pretty much all the rules say, the runner has to be able to touch the base, and not go out of his way to interfere (reaching up / grabbing the fielder)

the only reason everyones in such an uproar on the play is because Tejada got hurt, which is more so because of the throw turning him back into the slide instead of leading him across the bag where he could have seen Utley coming.

Also, what happens if Utley avoids the contact, and they turn two? Yeah, he could have slid less aggressive but its the playoffs, youre down a game, and losing 2-1. Youre out there to win

As for the over turning of the play, I know MLB really struggled, and had long session on how to handle continuation plays when a play is over turned. Say the play is a runner on first, ground ball to second, second baseman "tags" the first runner, and proceeds to throw the ball away to first at which point the batter attempts to take second. The first basemen now throws down to second where he throws that ball away allowing the batter to take 3rd. After a challenge, it is deemed on the initial tag play, the tag was missed, the runner is now safe. So where do you put the runners? Even if the fielder still throws the ball away, the first basemen is no longer going to throw the ball to 2nd, hes going to be looking home as the first runner would still be on the bases. Theres even the possibility the runner on 2nd never takes 3rd depending on where the ball went. There is so many possibilities on plays like that, someones always going to complain that they got something wrong. Just like last nights play. But im pretty sure baseball did set down some pretty strict guidelines on those plays, so theyd at least be consistent.

I'm sorry, can you point out where Utley slid? He barrel-rolled into the fielder's leg. There was nothing clean about it.

This seems inconsistent with the rationale that allowed him to be called safe. I could be wrong, since that was a convoluted argument in the first place. Such a mess.

So all of Canada is offended by Harold Reynolds saying Canadians aren't very good at catching foul balls because they don't play enough baseball. That's a very Canadian thing to be offended by.

youre an idiot.
point taken
and your an idiot, I guarantee you Utley did not expect Tejada, to reverse pivot back into that play, infact, its pretty clear he was not expecting it, OR HED HAVE PROTECTED HIS FACE WHEN HE TOOK A KNEE TOO IT
Utleys lucky he wasnt knocked out with a concussion

Utley was going in hard to break up a double play
the bad feed from the 2nd basemen changed Tejadas positioning and left him vunerable
What was Utley supposed to do? sense that throw was going to be late and slide 1 step sooner?

If Tejada doesnt get hurt, NO ONE is talking about this play
there have been 100's of dirtier slides in baseball

and lastly, this one is way worse since Lawrie can see that Escobar is not even trying to turn two, hes clearly taken the throw like a first basemen, and Lawrie goes straight for Escobars legs

and how bout this one? also way worse than last nights

so yes, I'm an idiot... and if Tejada doesnt get hurt on that play last night, no ones talking about how "dirty" that slide was today.

and if you idiots REALLY watch the play, Utley is setting up for more of a hook slide, anticipating Tejada coming ACROSS the bag (like your taught too do) to take out his legs on the right field side of the bag. Tejada reverse pivots / 360s back into the bag (which, if ya actually ever played the game, youd know from little league on, your taught, TO NEVER DO, you NEVER turn back into the bag, and you NEVER turn your back on someone sliding into the bag, NEVER, to avoid injuries) and BAM, we have way more contact than Utley was anticipating, which is evident by the knee to the face he takes.

If Tejada doesnt try to be super man and turn that double play, hes probably not hurt, and no ones talking about it

You guys have a point but since Utley is a giant penis I'm fine with the suspension. I remember being horrified when the cubs were supposedly after him this summer.
