They are stupid. They might be hoping for more fans, whatever, but why would you think that telling people that is a good marketing strategy for a PEARL-we-don't-give-a-fuck-sabotaged-thier-own-career-how-cool-grr-argh-grunge-JAM album.

I didn't realize until now that was from a Billboard article written by TFT's Jessica L. Even more disappointing on that basis. Like, rather than say "a version of SBM is on the album, which was also on Ed's Uke Songs," why not ask BoB how this version is different?

Again, I'm sure these were quotes pulled from a larger feature they will do soon. Billboard always does one.

Maybe all of this apocalyptic / religious-agenda / cultic imagery from PJ is a cry for help. Maybe Brendan has them all chained in his basement in front of a shrine to Satan, with the words "THINK OF MUSIC AS A PRODUCT" scrawled in blood across the walls.

The problem from the beginning (if there was one) was that there were so many different kinds of Pearl Jam. If they settled on one, you could guarantee 4/5 of the fanbase wouldn't like it.

I don't think this is a good enough answer. They're alienating you now, right? You're not supposed to like being alienated.
