I just watched the OT over the last 3 nights, and they're all very good, but I think ROTJ is probably the best standalone movie.

ROTJ final space battle is still the very best space battle of all. I doubt anything in these new films will come close.

I also seriously doubt any set-pieces in this will be able to top the intercut climax(es) of ROTJ. That whole sequence is outstanding.

I go back and forth on the new death star thing. We've seen it. But as far as useful weapons in an inter planetary civil war goes, it's pretty hard to beat a planet destroying weapon. I'd keep making one as well.

It is. That space battle remains my gold standard, but every sequence is amazing. ROTJ does have the advantage of being the finale of a three movie storyline, in fairness. That's hard to top. Though this has the advantage of 30 extra years of technology and the advantage of not being the prequels.

1. So far they've been pretty beatable.

2. It's 100% a dumb weapon, because it destroys all the resources and infrastructure that you could have used if you'd claimed that planet/system. It's like using nukes in a civil war.

3. It's a lazy creative decision for a Star Wars movie to make. Like, one of the laziest choices they could make at this point.

I wish they'd incorporate the Malevolence-style weapon from the Clone Wars into one of the movies.

Hang on a second

If it's a Starkiller planet that kills a sun and thus the planets around the sun, how do they move it around?
Or does it just strike from that fixed position? Across the galaxy? Or vast spaces to the sun the want to hit? If so it only can hit a supremely thin wedge along its equatorial orbit.
