I was probably over reacting, I was just annoyed at the 'if you don't like pearl jam maybe it will bring you in, that's the whole idea'. It makes it sound like when he first met up with the band he was like ' so what have we got, what are we going for?' And the band said ' FANS we need more faaaaannnsss' and he said 'Welp let's get on it' . Like more than any burning desire to create music the album was created to pull in more tickets.
Like I said, over reacting to a throw away comment but still. Just you wait until Eddie says the album was fun or someshit and I start foaming at the mouth and breaking things.

It's hardly the first 'throwaway comment'. We have a drawer full of them now. Throwaway comments from all sides, building the picture that this album (and the last one) are nothing but products.

As a band, music is something you share with the world. If they want to reach out to fans, I don't see anything wrong with that. This supposed attitude of 'we just make music that comes from our souls and don't care if anyone likes it or not' doesn't make any sense to me. You release music so other people can listen to it and hopefully, appreciate it. Otherwise, you don't. Why go through the hassle of even forming a band and touring if you really don't care whether people like it or not. Just play to yourselves in the basement and be done with it.

I've got no problem with people talking about fan-grabbing as well as interesting or enlightening comments about the music. Because, well, that's what gets you the fans, isn't it? The music. So that's your priority in terms of conversation points. Or is it? What am I getting wrong here? I didn't say PJ aren't allowed more fans.

What if the fight to get it back again was really a fight to get back the fans, acclaim and all attached that was run from in 94/95. Maybe their lap of honour after Ten Redux and subsequent festival appearances have them reconsidering their legacy.
And then instead of creating the music they want to, they create what they believe is wanted.
I don't necessarily believe this, just throwing it out there.

I think the 'fight to get it back again' was exactly that. Maybe it was the hardcore's message from the band; this is what we're doing now. You can be on board or get off at this stop. So maybe Backspacer was an anti-No Code.

Or maybe, you know, these things aren't mutually exclusive. You could form a band, make music that comes from your soul and want to share it with the world without your main concern being how much of a hit it's gonna be.

Sure but I think it needs to be both. You create an album and hope people like it and find it engaging, not create an album you know people will like just so you can get more fist pumping sing alongers in the crowd. Otherwise what are they fans of ? The experience? The "jamily" . I know its probably romantic and naive, but I always like hearing that the music comes first.
Look I'm probably getting my self into a tizzy for nothing, but it just left a sour taste in my mouth that the first thing we're hearing about the album more than any concept or direction or desire from the band to express something is "maybe we'll get more fans". That's mostly their marketing peoples fault for throwing B'oB out there first when he apparently doesnt want to/ isn't allowed to talk about the album properly yet.

Yup. I guess all I can say is that it's his job, so he can only do everything from his point of view. It's his project from his perspective. Hopefully soon, Pearl Jam will start actually promoting the shit out of it for themselves. If they don't, wow, that'll be strange.

Because it's promo. They have a marketing campaign set out. The band have already spoken to journalists months ago - I expect those will be rolling out in the magazines and websites in the next few weeks. Want to know why BoB was so cagey in that Rolling Stone interview? Because Pearl Jam weren't 'talking' about the album yet. His hands are tied on what he can actually say.
I don't know why people are worried about this. Promotion will ramp up the closer to release date, and the band will start talking.
Do I have a source for this? No, I'm talking out of my ass - but it seems common place with most artists. It's done to build hype. In a few weeks, we won't be able to move for interviews and articles about the band. We're just currently in the dead zone where the first single has dropped but it's still quite a way from the album dropping.

It's probably naive to think this way but perhaps the band aren't talking about the record much and maybe won't talk about it nearer to release date for fear that by talking about it they're going to plant expectations in everyone's minds as to what the songs are like. Perhaps they want to keep as tight-lipped as possible because they want us all to hear the album with no preconceived notions about what it will be like. It will be fresh and new without loads of baggage attached to it.
But obviously, we're still over a month away so there's plenty of time for more promo stuff.
