Sunday Times is reporting the Chinese government was alert via domestic bioscience companies mid-December of the disease and they suppressed the information. When the US CDC arrived on 08.Jan, the hid the crucial details then as well.

in a way the trump tariffs may have helped reduce the supply shock bc companies had been adjusting already for the last year or so

Looking at the medical supply chain, the tariffs had zero impact on US access to animal drugs which rely on pharmaceutical ingredients from China. Due to the virus, 6 of the 32 principle animal drug firms have already reported serious supply chain disruptions that could lead to shortages.
For medical devices used in the United States, the tariffs had zero impact on availability. With the virus, multiple manufacturers have acknowledged their production being adversely affected by staff shortages due to the virus. Hospitals are currently developing contingency plans that assume a shortage of equipment.
For human drugs requiring Chinese pharmaceuticals, so far neither has had an impact.
Tariffs are generally pretty targeted, often have loopholes for certain conditions or groups, and allow for alternative acquisition pathways (just buy from someone else instead). They also weaken the industries they affect, making them less capable of adapting to other problems that come up. Saying tariffs prepped industries for a globally disruptive event is a bit like saying “I’m prepared for the housing crisis, because I’m already behind on my mortgage.”

We got an email from our medical supply company last week regarding mask availability. So, 50% of the world’s supply of masks are manufactured in China and the Chinese military has taken control over production. 25% of the world’s supply of masks are made in Taiwan and the Chinese government has taken control of production. The last 25% are produced by a company here in the United States, Georgia IIRC, and they can’t get them made fast enough for demand.

yeah i was generalizing - if you follow earnings calls (for industries other than medical, apparently) there has been an awareness of the need to reduce dependency on china, for at least a year now, bc of the tariff talk. so it should at least not be a total balls-out unique scenario for many companies, as many will have at least looked at the situation and developed contingency plans based on all the erratic stuff over the last year
clearly a drop in the bucket though if you take equity market reaction as an indicator of projected impact

Seriously the hysteria over this is mind-numbing. Fewer than 3,000 deaths worldwide. For those who like math, that's
0.00004142857142857143% of the ~7 billion people in the world.
Quick, run to Costco!

It’s still early. A week ago no one had it in Norway, now the number is 19. But all seem to be doing well, about the same as a flu for those people so far.

Not to be dismissive, but 19 people in Norway ain’t shit. Of course it’s going to make its way around the world here and there. Wake me up when it’s killing hundreds of thousands in a country like China where the health standards aren’t what they are in the western world (see wet markets, where this thing started).

And while I’m no means a conspiracy-minded person, the media is absolutely manipulating this non-story. I’m fact I think there’s a nugget of truth to the idea that it’s being used to hurt Trump. Yeah, I said it, but I call it like I see it.

19 people anywhere is nothing, unless it’s your family and friends. But 0 to 19 in a week says that it’s just starting out. Bet the number will be a lot bigger soon.

But why do it now when the Democratic primaries are going on? Seems to take away from exposure to the candidates as well. This would be a good strategy if it was closer to the main election

If anything, this seems kind of reassuring.
There's likely to have been an under the radar outbreak in Washington for weeks, lots of people walking around unknowingly infected, yet there hasn't been any noticeable impact.

It's a pretty significant news story outside of the USA too, you realise. Leading stories on news bulletins, etc. and nothing to do with Trump.
