I'm 99.9% sure that this is not how they see it. This is the music they want to be making and they are very excited about it and proud of it, as they are with every new album they release. This all boils down to what music always comes down to in the end... it's a matter of personal preference. This is what they prefer to make right now, regardless of talent or ability. And, unfortunately, regardless of what we'd like to hear from them.

Spoonman has the entire band committing to an odd time-signature and more groove-metal chug than you can shake a stick at; Matt is still just "playing along" to it, nothing more, it's just that the bones of the song are more complex

I disagree, the drums in that song feel great. Maybe not the best example of Matt's ability, .. but it is also a "fun" song, which is why I pointed to it. Matt sounds like he's enjoying himself in it, at least.

Nobody will become a fan of PJ after listening to SBWM. Where did Brain of J, Life Wasted or Hail, Hail go? Those were good, honest rock songs, and they were really good at writing them. Even Getaway o Gonna see my friend are above average.

But this fun/happy PJ is turning ugly really quick.

I'd take this over Getaway, GSMF and Life Wasted (apart from the bridge, that's gold)

Life Wasted live is a killer. Way better song than the new one, I think.

i like the ¨mess aspect¨of this one. And boy, does it sounds good...Seems the album is going to sounds pretty amazing....but the song its just ok, its not interesting or special. Some cool moments, the solo and thats about it.

I think it should be. They're a live band, and they have to think about how the songs translate to their live shows when they record them.

I don't know how you can put out a single that won't be played live more than 25 times. You should be excited to play your new material live, and hope people love it.

I think there are ways to excel at the 4/4 thing. I think Matt's drumming in "Gonna See My Friend" is a good example of it. He's just half asleep in this tune.
