Skimmed this thread since last week. Some interesting thoughts.

- I totally agree that the production on Shangri-La is horrible. Its their worst record.

- Dean DeLeo is a beast of a guitarist for sure. One of my underrated favorites, and you can always tell its him. He has his own sound and style. Its all Vox and Led Zeppelin influences to me, but his tone is fairly unique in the crowd of 90's guitarists. I know plenty of people shit all over Army of Anyone, but that's a solid album with Richard Patrick. Lots of cool songs.

- In talking about who was at fault, don't forget the rest of the guys in STP had their own drug issues too. Dean was a junkie right there with Scott. There was some article I read in the late 90s about him pissed off that Scott would never share with him. Saying his band never got him help seems far-fetched. They disbanded several times over it hoping he'd get his shit together. Even Slash and Duff took him into the isolated wilderness to train and detox when they started VR. There's only so much other people can do for someone with mental illness who wants to do drugs.

- I also completely forgot that I'd seen Weiland on his own at a DC radio fest in 1998. The Talk Show era for the other guys. The crowd hated him on his own and his band was really loose. He looked so doped up.

- Has anyone read Weiland's book? Its sitting on my shelf from last Christmas unread. I flipped through some of it. Reads like a journal.

Samba Nova is good, didn't realize it was on the s/t album. Not a huge fan of that record (from the little I've heard), but this is good.

You Can't Drive Me Away is ok. Not bad, but that chorus is a little plodding. I can see why they left it off No 4, because I can't imagine where it would fit in the tracklisting.

Is there a torrent or something floating around with unreleased STP stuff?

Samba Nova was easily the best thing released with the s/t album...that's the one album of theirs i could never get into.

They're OK....just for me it falls far short of all the other albums...even Shangri-La Dee Da.

I'll take Too Cool Queenie, Hello It's Late, Bi Polar Bear, A Song for Sleeping and Wonderful over anything off the self titled album.

And So I Know > Trippin' On A Hole... is a great 1-2 punch. Art School Girl is adversely one of the worst things I've ever heard. Thankfully, Adhesive helps me to forget it.

Purple is their magnum opus. I think people are getting carried away with the No. 4 and Tiny Music are their best records talk. Core is easily #2. I prefer Tiny Music to No. 4, but I wouldn't spend a lot of time debating over it.
