Is Kristof unaware of the massive backlash against the store that tried to sell 'smart' guns? I imagine reception to that sort of mandate will poll just slightly above a national registry.

What exactly is wrong with the argument? How do the supply chains of illicit drugs and black market guns compare? Are we going to start training drug dogs to alert to the smell of CLP?

It's pure populism. It's not a black and white issue and any argument reducing it to that is simply ridiculous.
Even heroin is still used medically in some countries, UK included. It still isn't something you're going to be given easily. You aren't creating less addicts and lowering the number of drug related deaths by making these drugs easier to get. The black market would barely notice, hell how many people get addicted to prescription drugs and end up on heroin because it's cheaper.

I don't think anybody wants to make guns illegal to begin with which makes the argument even less relevant.
It's really about starting to treat them as you know weapons and not pseudo toys.
You can't get oxycontin, morphine or heroin for a headache over the counter and it's not because paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin are better analgesics.

It might be easier to compare the markets for illegal guns and drugs or the resulting deaths if Congress wasn't banning the CDC from studying gun deaths, the causes, and potential strategies for preventing them.

I'm tempted to say there are more people with illegal weapons in their homes than illegal heroin, but again ... it's illegal to gather data.

It's not illegal, Congress just prevented the CDC from studying it.
