The success of any rock record these days comes down to the grind-it-out phase after the band inevitably plunges down the charts in the first month. There simply isn't as much of a radio audience for rock (even if a band scores a rock "hit" the sheer number of people is much smaller these days that are exposed to rock radio). It comes down to how the band and single is doing 3-4-5 months out and if they can sustain a small but steady rate of sales over several months. Vampire Weekend seems to be doing a reasonable job at this, but QOTSA I think are out of it in that respect. Comes down to the old-school person to person word of mouth and touring and a little bit of radio support (which actually is very refreshing) That said, even pop is sucking gas - Miley and Katy Perry are hugely exposed, so to get the sales they are getting looks like a huge disappointment to me. I don't care how the industry spins it. Music industry is a pile of ashes.

Over the course of maybe 2-3 years, did they ever improv or fiddle around with a few notes that might have sounded like the tracks on LB?
