This is a painful story for me to write.

For a quarter of a century, I was a major part of the conservative movement. But like many on the right, in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory I had to ask some uncomfortable questions. The 2016 presidential campaign was a brutal, disillusioning slog, and there came a moment when I realized that conservatives had created an alternate reality bubble—one that I had helped shape.

So the tax plan raises taxes on lower middle class families, and removes deductions for state and local taxes.

Aces, gents.

Worth a read. If this interpretation is accurate, and I think it's reallllllly hard to say just yet (plenty more primaries to come, so we will know soon), then the future is either the GOP collapsing in on itself and reemerging later under a redesigned banner, or possibly the two Party split some Republican analysts believe is already happening. Either way, the next few years are likely to be miserable for the rest of us, as the base's takeover is happening during a Republican government.

That said, Democrats flipped two more seats this week, including one district that went for Trump by over 20 points. They've now flipped 8 seats since the election, and not given up a one. And the only hope Republicans have for placating furious donors after the health care fart is to pass unpopular tax plans and then try for unpopular healthcare reductions all over again. Hard to reclaim your brand, repair your brand, calm the insurgents, and re-win undecideds while also making good on all those promises.

Hopefully they remove deductions for marriage and children, too.

I can't wait for these corporations who will now have lower taxes to funnel that extra money to their workers.

But... don't the bottom 40% of tax payers actually pay no net tax? So wouldn't combining this with doubling the standard deduction not really punish them?

And why should the federal government subsidize high income earners in states that have their own income taxes just because a majority of those states happen to generally vote democratic?

It's a shame it doesn't repeal the mortgage interest deduction. And it should increase the estate tax as opposed to eliminating it.

This would be so expensive it's hard to see how this could pass through reconciliation if they aren't able to cobble together some modicum of bipartisan support to get it through the Senate.

If you want the middle class to pay less taxes then cut middle class tax rates. The government shouldn't be in the business of incentivizing/subsidizing certain things, like taking on debt to "own" a home.

In principle I agree with you, BUT, there are literally millions of homes the would become no longer affordable to their current owners and/or the resulting price suppression would destroy the accumulated wealth of the owners. It would like result in even more consolidation of property ownership in the hands of businesses and the 1% as well.
