Thanks. I fucking love this stuff. I could talk about interpretations of stats analysis all day.

That said, I compare PJ to their peers in rock (I don't count fun. in this category). PJ tend to do however well rock in general does (ie. they did best when Nirvana blew the doors open for Ten). I compare them to NIN, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, QOTSA, Alice in Chains, Green Day, Vampire Weekend, The National, Black Sabbath, Arcade Fire, etc. I see them doing above average in that respect. Better than most in the above group, but not as good as your Arcade Fire or Black Keys. That's pretty decent. I see them doing better than Black Sabbath on that list, more closer or better than Vampire Weekend. Depends if Sirens sticks for a few months. Then they can squeeze out a bunch of 2-3K per week for a couple months, which adds up to a nice little load of sales at the end. Grind-it-out, thus is the career of a rock band right now. Where do you get this stuff? So there's only 4 platinum albums this year? Wow, that's even worse than I thought. Gold would be a pretty huge success. What's amazing is that THE thing in music these days is EDM, but they're hardly represented on that list. Other metrics should be developed to properly account for an artist' popularity.

World's an interesting place, and it's packed full of information.

Now, numbers don't draw me in to a greater degree than any other type, but there's very little out there that you can say "Hey, I wonder if..." and I won't immediately get curious about it.

The biggest problem is that if you take away all bullshit artists that doesn't know how to sing, how to write, how to play, that are directly sponsored by mainstream modern media that only wants to sell one week hits, we may have PJ on the top. That's pretty sad.

Should we wait for Ed to wipe his ass with The Sun? Jeez, I think it won't happen, he may get his ass dirty

The ones who are selling aren't even musicians, they're more "entertainers", or they have an extremely no-holds-barred sell at any costs approach like some of the rappers. It's broken man, maybe for good reason. I think success as measured for PJ is doing just decent within this paradigm (which is being competitive w/ bands like Arcade Fire or Vampire Weekend) and doing what they do, killing it live and being able to play their new songs and continue to win people over one by one. It's as if the music business never happened. It's back to street-level and grassroots, which I think is good.

It's fine, actually. It's back to the kinds of numbers they saw in the 1960's. The difference is that in the time between now and then, the raw level of disposable income (especially on the part of teens) created this monster of an industry, and it became acceptable and even reasonable to invest millions into a recording project because goddamn if you weren't going to get your money back, baby. Even in 2000, after downloading culture had started to get a real foothold, the top ten albums of the year sold 60 million records together....just those ten records. That's fucking stupid.

The industry would be rocking along just fine if it stopped trying to maintain practices that worked in 1995, and started to accept that the last 30 years were a result of the times and not of an inner-industry magic that they can somehow recreate.

The shit some people can convince themselves...
