Scary stuff, man. My grandfather died of Alzheimer's, it's brutal. My grandma on the other side had some mild form of dementia with no physical effects, but spent the last 10-15 years of life not remembering what happened a few min earlier (still lived to 101!). Either way, it sucks for them but is actually a huge burden on the families.
I'm so sorry to hear you and your family have had to deal with this. I'm sure it was just fucking terrible.
The burden on me (we aren't having kids) is one of the big topics that my wife brings up when we talk about it. She has some very clear wants/needs and I plan on respecting those if this ends up affecting her. But holy fuck am I not ready for that.
I hear ya... it's in my family, and honestly I don't fear what dementia would do to me as much as I fear what it'd do to my wife and kids (I have 3). It's a terrible & weird disease. My grandfather laid in a hospital bed for the last 2 years, but didn't really know. He thought he was a young man who got there yesterday and was leaving tomorrow... every single day. It was his wife and my mom who were constantly stressed and burdened.

My grandmother that passed recently had Alzheimer’s. It was really sad to see the decline. So I know it runs in my family.

My mom experienced similar signs of dementia during her last few days before cancer got her. I couldnt fucking imagine dealing with something like that with a loved one for an extended period of time. Fucking awful.

Between my concussions, migraines and various health problems related to brain troubles, I expect to die of a stroke or something.
Oh, and then there are my various psychic scars from constant warfare as an emerging Overcomingman against the forces of control. Always teetering on the edge of mental breakdown. No one travels through the warp unscathed.

Thanks, man. Things are fine right now. Hopefully, it's not something we have to deal with. But since it's very possible we want to be as ready as we can be.

I was watching one of the clips from Willis's new movies where it seemed clear that he was struggling. It sounded like he was just politely agreeing with someone rather than acting. Like he was just trying to keep up with what was being said.

Bruce could actually recover. He’s not got Alzheimer’s/dementia. He has aphasia. That has the possibility of recovery whereas dementia does not hold such.

My assumption is that he's probably been trying to recover from this for quite some time but unable to and thus the retirement.
Who knows. Not like we'll be missing new bruce willis movies! Though i was hoping for one more die hard!

Yes brain injury is really scary, and this reminds me: Yesterday I learned that a guy I know in NYC had a really bad fall in his apartment leading to severe traumatic brain injury. He also got pneumonia and covid and had to be intubated for a week. He's stable and no longer intubated. Apparently he's "made a lot of progress, he is currently able to blink and do tracking with his eyes." That really shook me, that the idea of making a lot of progress is that he's able to blink on his own. Who knows what the future holds for that guy, all because of a fall. Terrifying

a good buddy of mine was the picture of health, maybe worked a little too hard in the food & bev world but he truly loved it more than just about anyone I’ve met. He had a random stroke, was in a coma for a few days. He’s basically a lumberjack/hippie/horticulturist now on Orcas, lives in a yurt. Just reframed all his priorities.
About ten years ago my best friend dropped dead out of the blue from an aneurism. Just alive one minute. Dead the next.
My cousin had a similar thing happen to him a few years later, but after a couple of days in the hospital, he was fine.
They both drank a lot. I suspect that was a cause.
