Maybe I'll be wrong, but it's hard to see how that exact same play works when everyone's mind is made up and the country is inarguably in worse shape.
This isn't entirely accurate. You can roll back the 538 polling average and see that Clinton was ahead nationally on September 30th by 3% (43.5 vs. 40.4). Today, Biden is up 50.5 vs. 42.9--that's a 7.5% lead. That difference isn't insignificant, and the national polls did not miss by much in 2016 (although some state polls did).
Yes, that's true - I should have probably pointed to Trump being behind in polling being similar, rather than the size of the deficit. That, the fewer amount of undecided voters, and the possibility that some state polling learned from its mistakes make this different than 2016.
Also no major third party candidates. Johnson was hanging around 8% in national polls on 9/30, and only finished just above 3% when the votes were actually counted.
I think the "third party vote" is going to be a " fuck both these guys vote" this time around

Is it just me, or has immigration been downplayed this election? Wonder why.

Maybe it's not a popular topic for dems and Trump doesn't want to remind people that he has failed to build a wall.

I also noticed that it was entirely absent. There's also the issue that Trump injected immigration into the '18 congressional campaigns (remember the caravans?) and that didn't play well. Trump is probably champing at the bit to talk about it, and, honestly, it's not like Biden has a great immigration record or anything, but I don't think it's a topic that would move the needle in either direction.

Impeachment was also only brought up once, I believe, and it was by Trump, during one of his woe-is-me moments. That feels like it happened 10,000 years ago, and at this point, nobody cares. Remember when people thought it would bolster Trump to a second term on a wave of indignation? Glory be.

That's interesting when you consider the virus has disabled normal life. We're basically a captive audience and we still don't watch.

At this point I'm kind of done with "thinking things"
