Ok, maybe I was a bit harsh and hyberbolic in my wording there. But the memories and lasting impact of a good playoff run are nothing compared to an actual WS victory. Ask the Dodgers.

It depends on each individual situation when it comes to celebrating. If youre a team that hasnt been to or won a playoff series in 20 years, have at it. If youre a team that is consistently in the playoffs, act like you've been there before.

Also, I think it depends on what kind of series it was. If you just swept someone, no need to go crazy. If you just won game 5/7, that's different.

But even with this I think every single step along the way doesn't need to be celebrated. If you haven't been there in decades celebrate when you clinch. Maybe even celebrate again if you win the pennant, but the division series? c'mon.

Actually, under the new format I'd say stick to this schedule and adjust slightly based on individual circumstances:

clinch the division: celebrate
clinch the wc: don't celebrate
win the wc game: celebrate
win the pennant: celebrate unless you win the pennant a lot
win the ws: burn down the locker room in celebration

Also, I think you can celebrate without all the champagne and beer everywhere until it's the world series. Save that one for when you win it all.

If you feel like celebrating.... celebrate.

I mean, if NFLers can celebrate every single first down catch they make, why can't the BJ's celebrate a division win?

I feel bad. I'm not trying to rain on phil's parade here. I've always just thought MLB went way too nuts about celebrating every single step along the way to victory.

You're probably right. I doubt I would remember Alomar's home run off Eckersley the same way I do now if it was a great moment in a runner-up season. Still, it doesn't change the way I feel about it right now, and I doubt the thousands of fans who stuck around after the game cared that it might not last forever while the team was running around jumping into the crowd and spraying people with champagne. Sports are all about in-the-moment reactions (unless you're a Habs fan, then the only thing that matters is 24 CUPS!), and saying people shouldn't be celebrating like that sounds a lot like the people who dislike Bautista's bat flip. These are people who haven't had anything to celebrate in over 20 years, and to expect them not to celebrate just because they haven't gone all the way yet is a bit crazy.

Either way, even people who have no association with either team are referring to this as one of the craziest, most exciting and memorable playoff games they've ever seen.

To be clear, I hate the organized celebrations, too. I kind of hate that teams win and then go into a nicely plastic-coated clubhouse and grab bottles from the neat stack in the middle of the room and have goggles all prepared for them.

Haha. For the record, every season is a failure unless you win a Cup and I assume Yankees fans feel the same way about a World Series.

Anyways, there are two points in the mix here:

1) All of MLB celebrates waaay too much. I never meant to point the finger at TO. I'll use hockey as my point of reference because it's the sport I watch the most - there is a mild-celebration after you win the conference final but the teams won't even touch the trophy because they know it doesn't mean shit. Champagne only comes out for a championship. I don't watch basketball but I get the feeling it's the same thing (?)

2) Having a 1st round playoff series handed to you due to 3 pathetic fielding errors is not exactly a monumental achievement in National sporting history. It's great for the city of Toronto, but the rest of us are going to hold onto a higher standard.
