Norway actually had a democratic election voting his family in as head of a monarchy, over getting a republic. This was in 1905, and his family was not in power at the time.

Since then we could have removed them anytime we wanted, but their popularity/approval rating has always been sky high. Now a nation mourns a good man, who worked tirelessly 300+ days a year, even in his 89th year.

They are not the actual rulers of our country (except in some minor formalities), but more like ambassadors, and they do a great job.
