Just awful, Strat. So sorry to hear of your friends' experience. Glad to hear they're as okay as they can be, but what a horrific thing to experience. It's despicable that our lawmakers don't take this seriously.

I’m sorry this got so close to you.

We’re in the midst of staff days across town before we return to class next week. This is year 26 for me. For the longest time, when there was a school shooting, I would think, “That would never happen at my school.” I don’t think there is a teacher in America who feels that way anymore. I think about it all the time. We do drills constantly, and then after huddling in our dark rooms, we go back to teaching and they go back to learning. It’s insane.

It isn’t bad parenting. It isn’t glorified violence on tv or in video games. It isn’t media coverage. It isn’t an overly medicated population battling depression and anxiety. It’s access. Like the thread title says. We cannot be trusted as a species.

Damn strat. Hope they find some mental relief soon.

its terrible enough seeing it on the news. i'm so sorry for you, your friend and his family. that's incredible how selfless he was to save his kids, but i'm not sure that is going to help at this moment. thoughts and prayers to you and your friend and family, but also appropriate votes and donations to end this nonsense. i like how the mayor said "they were literally praying". thats not enough and at this point pretending we don't have a gun problem in this country is like pretending climate change isn't real.

According to the K-12 Shooting Database, it's 146. This includes "any gun fired, brandished with intent, or bullet hitting school property, regardless of injuries or deaths; includes accidents, suicides, gang-related shootings, and fights that escalate into shootings."

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, it's 91. "Gun incidents that resulted in a person being killed or wounded, as well as those in which a gun was discharged and no one was shot."

According to Education Week, it's 8. "Only school shootings causing injuries or deaths on school property or buses during school hours or events."


The U.S. is still worst no matter what measurement you use.
