Russia’s absolute minimum first demand is Ukraine accepting Crimea officially as Russian. At the moment they seem most concerned with creating Russian-occupied land all the way to Crimea, which is why Mariupol is so important. Connecting to Transnistria is another goal, making Ukraine a landlocked country, and Russia taking historic Novorossia.

From what I read last night, the bombardment in eastern Ukraine has driven even more Ukrainians toward Europe and away from Russia.

I believe so. My relatives in Kherson always had a lot of love for Russia and Russians. They speak Russian and Ukrainian all in one to each other, even just between a married couple. Now they are clearly horrified from the invasion.
Read today that Russia has a plan to have a mock election in Kherson to make it part of Russia. Wouldn’t be popular among the local election.
