Yep. That lack of self-awareness you hit on I think is also a pretty big key.

his whole demeanor and way he is handling it just screams he's an asshole with no empathy whatsoever. Absolutely no regret, he is "standing his ground" in that he did the right thing. I get why one might want to do that, but soften up a bit and at least acknowledge "wow, this sucks, i wish it didnt go down like this but this is what i thougth was right"

With the possibility of a civil suit still being out there, he can't really risk admitting any mistake.

Of course, but the guy shows absolutely no remorse whatsoever. "yea, im a cop, i did the right thing and its never easy to take a life. yadda yadda"

The guy is stone cold d bag
if he's telling the truth I wouldn't feel any remorse either. Fuck some guy if he attacks me and ends up dead. I don't fault anyone for not acting the way society deems ok in these situations (by situations I mean these bullshit interviews where they expect an apology and remorse).

he should be Image

assuming he's telling the truth. He probably just shot that dude for no reason.

The cop fired a single shot? I didn't think that was possible.

The issue with this is that even in Texas the police have absurd union protections. Assuming that he's not convicted of a crime that deprives him of the right to carry a gun, it's pretty safe to assume that the union could get him reinstated with damages. I would like to congratulate the powers that be for getting in front of this early on, but they really can't win unless all the components of the justice system decide that this cop has to go.

I look forward to the release of the body cameras of todays Oakland police shooting, but I don't imagine there's any hope of placating the BLM crowd.

Yeah, how do we placate these unreasonable jerks calling for an end to systemic, institutionalized racism?

The assumption seems to be that every time a black person is shot that institutional racism is to blame. Every once in a while the decedent really did deserve to get shot, as appears in this instance. Outrage seems more important than actually trying to tackle the issue of police accountability.

I wonder why we're at the point where that is the assumption.

He nailed a lot of the current issues: race, media, housing and class warfare, shitty cops and so on. Gonna re-watch the wire again. I think it's more potent/prescient now.

Anyway, I've Been able to find a couple really good Simon interviews this past week due to Show me a Hero coming out this weekend and I found some things he did a couple years ago. Good stuff.

Despite documenting all of Martin O'Malley's failures, he still supports the guy for president. I love Simon's work, but it's a bit disheartening to see him promote the same failed politicians, almost as if he didn't really pay attention to his own work.

I think this article has some good stuff in it but a few glaring holes.

With regards to unions, people turned their backs on them because they got into the one place they should be barred from, the government. If Ford has strike with it's union or locks them out, I as the consumer has choice. There area myriad of near identical choices. But when a public sector strikes, I am fucked. The government creates the monopoly and the union holds me financial hostage. The monopoly on the service makes sense in many cases but the being held financial hostage does not. So yeah, I'm going to turn my back on unions as that's what every public sector union does to its customers and citizens.

Comparing shared risk insurance with the Affordable Health Care Act is disingenuous. Everyone pays into the shared risk insurance plan, no one gets a free ride. The same cannot be said for the Affordable Health Care Act sand I support it. I support it without telling myself lies about what it is.

Exactly. Unions within a gov't mandated monopoly are the absolute worth. That is one of the few things I like about Walker in Wisc, busting those public unions.

Towns are strapped for cash, yet their police force has brand new cruiser's and all the latest riot gear and shiny suvs

city councils need to wake up to the fact that the police force doexs not decide the budget. I;ve been close to peop[le on city council and the Chief would just send them a number, as to how much money the police needed, and they never questioned or thought about cutting back, they gave em every penny every year.

Meanwhile schools rely on bonds and levies and shit.

Money for violence but not for education.
