I don't know that I have a favorite Tom Waits song anymore. But this was my first favorite. That we still have a relationship fifteen years later is all thanks to this song. It's just a perfect expression of the romance he can find in ruined and lonely places.

that's the live version from Big Time/ Beautiful Maladies. I'm not sure if I like it more than the studio version, but this was the first one I heard. There was simply nothing in my life like this when I first heard it.

A quick word about My Father's House, since I picked it during softball last night.

This is another Springsteen tune that helped me realize how much more there was to this guy than Dancing in the Dark. I don't know if I've heard a song that illustrates family wounds and the often unrealized hope for reconciliation so starkly and beautifully.
