Excellent read, Delima. I felt dirty having read that Switch Opens was defeated, but I understand (and you fully back-up) your decision. Also completely agree on your synopsis of Limo Wreck, Overfloater, Tighter & Tighter, and especially Like Suicide. They really are SG at their peak.

i thought you'd be way madder i picked BUTOW over Head Down. Pretty Noose just doesn't do it for me.
I can sort of justify your pick of BUTOW. But Let Me Drown over Pretty Noose?

It could be one of the most beautifully depressing songs ever, and this coming from a big Lanegan fan.

Exactly. What i love about those albums is how depressing and beautiful they are. They managed to feel down and at the same time, scream about it.

Listen to this again:
Pretty Noose is a good song, but Let Me Drown is fierce. I like the main riff better than Pretty Noose's riff. I actually find Pretty Noose's chorus kind of dull, and I really like both the pre and post solo sections of Drown. Drown still grabs me. Pretty Noose doesn't.

Some great writing there, but BUTOW over Head Down is... I dunno... it's just wrong
BUTOW is Soundgarden flirting with mainstream radio of the era
Head Down is Soundgarden in their own world, not giving a fuck about anything else

I don't think BUTOW is thaaaaat mainstream, not compared to BHS, Burden, Spoonman, etc. But I actually agree with the way you describe Head Down. I love Head Down, and knew my pick wouldn't be a popular choice.

While I do love Head Down more, I'm also a huge fan of BUTOW. I actually have it (Kim's slow burner solo) as my morning alarm clock tone on the ol' iPhone.

Not to be a downer or anything but Soundgarden was the mainstream radio of their era. Many songs on Down on the Upside have that same dark, sideways pop vibe that ''Blow Up the Outside World'' has. Its problem isn't that it's too poppy; it's that it's just not that exciting of a song. Not bad though. Probably the weakest of their big hits.

Oh man, no way. ''Burden in My Hand'' is a wonderful song, and maybe one of the few moments in Soundgarden's career that accurately presaged ''Euphoria Morning.'' I consider it a high point of Cornell's songwriting within the group.

Don't disagree with any of this. The disagreement here comes from my feeling that BUTOW captures a mood and feeling perfectly in the way few other songs, not just SG songs, do. So I'm not knocking BIMH or Head Down...I just see something in BUTOW that most of RM doesn't.

Euphoria Morning was the direction i think Cornell wanted SG to go for. And Thayil didnt want to.
