Yeah, to me Riot Act is all about rediscovery in light of personal tragedy (Roskilde) and societal crumble (Bush). And Backspacer is all about rediscovery of the positives and the light and the fun.

I'd rather have my body snatched than my back spaced.

They're just hopelessly intertwined and reinforcing (again, as opposed to S/T, which is telling stories about people who aren't Ed). Songs like Can't Keep, All or None, Save you, Ghost, Cropduster, even I am Mine and LBC, can probably cut both ways, and Help Help, Bushleaguer, 1/2 Full, Green Disease are definitely primarily political. Even Thumbing My Way, which is an intensely personal story is still about feeling lost with no where to go, in a geographic sense as much as an emotional/mental one.

Let me pick one...

Not sure if you're saying Cropduster (for example) is or is not political, or it's personally political or not. I don't really think that matters. It could actually be both, but it's blatantly political. Regardless of how one approaches that song, it is overwhelmingly political. Not only can you see the 9/11 line in the second verse... but the title, "cropduster" was so alarming back then. You may recall a major threat spiraled down from our government following 9/11 was terrorists occupying small cropdusters to enact chemical warfare.

Regardless of the merits of such threats, the fact that the band named that song Cropduster at that time... was an enormous political message in and of itself. Ed, in my opinion, was trying to flip that threat (cropduster) on it's head, he basically says it in the lyrics - it's all the other way round, we're upside down.

Cropduster is probably the best song on Riot Act, by the way.
