I think the mass majority would say that he found a new gear.. or at least an old familiar gear since Fear of the Dawn.
But most people look at that record as a return to form or whatever. That's not my take. I still think Boarding House is his second best solo record.

Lazaretto or Fear of the Dawn for me, but the last one will probably take that crown soon.

I think I'd put "Boarding House Reach" as his most
interesting listen from his discography, it's pretty lose and experimental, almost to a fault.
My two favorite tracks from this one sound nothing alike "Over and Over and Over" & "What's Done Is Done"... With "Humoresque" a very close 3rd.
My favorite "Fear of the Dawn" will very likely get dethroned by "No Name" soon, and place "Lazaretto" on 3rd.
There's waaaay too much ground to cover with this guy though.
White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, producing credits & collaborations, TMR, color scheme and aesthetics, etc. etc. etc.
I mean, the artwork from every 45 single in his discography so far, is part of a collage:
- Spoiler: show

The guy is busy.

yeah No Name is just a torrent of energy and i love that. I also love what he has been doing on tour.
But basically i was hooked with Jack in 2009 when i saw Dead Weather live and i couldnt believe how badass they were.

For me, just the solo stuff goes:
1. Blunderbuss
2. Boarding House Reach
3. No Name
4. Lazaretto
5. Fear Of The Dawn
6. Entering Heaven Alive

I haven’t ordered a vault in year or so, it feels. This will drag me in. 2 days left.

Love Interruption is one of his ten best songs Stripes or otherwise but there's not much else from that record that I think about.

he's talented, but there's something about him that just feels off, illegitimate, phony like, to me

I would never use the word Phony when referring to Jack.
Perhaps one of the most personal dudes in the industry today. Doing whatever he feels like doing in his own terms.

OK, I do think about the title track and On and On and On quite a bit.
