Core might be a little too dated, especially if you're not between the ages of 13-19, but it's still a very cohesive collection of pretty good songs. It's their Ten.

Tiny Music has a few songs that rank amongst their best, but it is mostly "meh" and the lows are just bad. 4 just bores me.

But Purple. *sigh*

It is. I think they, like many of the early 90s groups we tend to compare, came on strong with an emotionally raw and powerful statement-type (look at us!) record, and then followed it up with a sophomore effort that matched the debut in bravado but surpassed it in creativity, class, technical proficiency, execution---pretty much everything.

Yes and no. I hadn't listened to them in about 10 years prior to this week, and I'm sure it was because I felt that I outgrew them many years ago. So, I don't think you're wrong. However, I have found that they still have a lot to offer me even after my musical palate has changed in almost every way. In fact, I'm convinced that the flame being reignited for Purple after so many years is a sure sign of a deep rooted appreciation for what they accomplished musically. There are some fantastic arrangements and melodies on that album. It's truly wonderful.

And I've been digging Fall To Pieces the last week or so

I'm glad STP came about when I was in high school. I can't say I appreciate their music more now, but I can't say that about anyone. However, of all the bands I loved - mainly the Seattle heavyweights - STP is the one whose records I continue to enjoy the most.

One of their strong suits was they kept it simple and went big. Songs like Silvergun Superman and Down remind me of how huge they sounded live, and they did it as a 4 piece. Every other band added members like a sitcom adding new kids. Nirvana added Pat, Pearl Jam added Boom, even Soundgarden added a guy playing spoons, for Chrissake. Foo Fighters are like fucking Full House on stage.

Weiland, though, is what makes STP hold up for me. He could put a melody on anything, for a start. But mostly he was fun. All the other singers seemed to write from their tortured or wannabe be tortured souls. Scott wrote with his dick. Most songs are about fucking, masturbating, shooting up, tripping balls, and living recklessly. He was living an 80s rocker lifestyle with a 90s band, and those songs were a bit of fun in my record collection of misery and depression.

Scott wasn't a genius. I don't think there is a thread about anyone in this forum who is. He and his band wrote some great, maybe even timeless, rock songs, though.

Actually, I think most of Weiland's songs are just as depressing and miserable as those others if you really pay attention to the lyrics. The music and vocals are often deceiving. I'm not sure I can think of a single STP that is just about how fun sex is or anything like that.

Listened to Core today for the first time since I don't know when. I was fun. Some of the songs weren't my thing, and sounded incredibly dated, but it's a pretty solid album overall.
