While they're still certainly unsettling, these sound more like "murders at colleges" as opposed to "school shootings."

How alarmingly quick the US governments response would be if it were random solitary Islamic extremists carrying out these shootings...

They'd be all over it in minutes, first shutting it down by force then not long after in legislation.

So why are they allowed continue simply because of some outdated constitutional 'right' ?

I dunno. The Ft. Hood shooting is probably the best example of something like that (even though it's disputed), and it was just as big of a blip on the radar as any school shooting.

Cos there have been that many. But in the scenario I depicted surely the media would spin it whatever way their agenda leans towards.

I can't help but think the only time we'd see real moves on this is if it were suddenly random attacks by Islamic extremists. That's the only way gun control and change could be packaged

Bad analogy ahead but the he while issue is a double edged sword. Way I see it is the only safe way out is to ban guns outright. It's a cancer eating away more rapidly on US society now on a weekly basis. The cure is on the table and nobody has the balls to implement it.

If it were Islamists (and rarely it is) I don't think that would change anything. If anything it would probably strengthen gun advocates.

I don't think a sudden outright ban on guns would do anything by itself to take care of the sheer number of guns that exist in the US. If such a law were even able to pass, it would take such a broad cultural consensus against gun ownership that such a law would be almost superfluous. And that's what I think it will take, when enough people say, "Dude, why the fuck do I even need to pack for self-defense?" As of now, the only way I can see it happening is on a generational basis, when Millennials and the generation after them reach peak power having grown up in a world that's not as violent as it was when their elder generations were in power.

Yeah an outright ban anytime soon would go over about as well as prohibition, and I'm sure much violence would result over it.

The thing is something is needed to speed up what you're describing. I don't think there is a tragedy big enough to do the trick. I think an actual political effort would. I'm not talking about much stricter laws alone but actually engaging in a serious public discourse that addresses the issue properly. I think even just challenging the status quo on the issue the NRA is so successfully sustaining would achieve a lot.
