I hated the beginning..the scene with Poe and Hux?? wtf? he is buying time with a joke? it felt like Spaceballs. Pretty much a lot of the humor made here seemed like a parody of a SW film. The scene with Luke and the monster´s milk...does Rian hate SW so much he needs to make fun of a beloved character that way? i hated that. I hated the whole Luke and Rey thing, ¨i wont help you¨ ¨yes, ill train you¨ ¨ nope go away¨...Poe is a great military leader? All his actions here are failures....Finn is taken into a non sense adventure we didnt needed. Snoke is dead? So why bother with his origins...Rey´s parents? yeah, we dont need to know that. Lazy, lazy.
Spoiler: show
i thought the opening bit was funny, but Hux as a character can't afford to be the butt of that joke. The monster milk scene was good - it's really just luke doing a bunch of grinding monastic chores to express disinterest to Rey ('this is my life - glamorous, isn't it. You don't want this so fuck off.' Their whole dynamic worked really well for me. Luke was conflicted about taking on another student, so when he first agreed to train her his is really doing so to grind an axe. It's not unitl later that he comes around.

Poe was NOT a great military leader. That is the whole point of his story. He's an inspiring guy, and a great pilot, but he doesn't understand that the importance of an insurgency isn't to win. it is to survive. That's the message behind his final line the film (I think his final line). The 'we are the spark' bit. The point is to be the spark. The flame comes later

They didn't bother with Snoke's origins, right? And we did need to know Rey's origins - not to put internet rumors to bed (if that was the case we would have learned Snoke's origin, which we do not need to know, from a narrative perspective). But the fact that Rey came from nowhere is central to the major thematic through line of the movie.
Spoiler: show
Well its a matter of taste i guess but i felt the beginning was a slap in the face. It was stupid because it didnt make sense and at the same time felt like a parody. The same with that monster´s mik scene. The lack of Snoke origins is unexpected and again, i feel its lazy. The big bad guy who bulit this new empire..we dont know who he is or were he came from...about rey´s parents..im not sure they wont say anything in the next chapter though...but a lot of things felt weird...Maz scene? awful. Why did Maz had Luke´s lightsaber? i feel those things will get unanswered and its sooo lazy...

Re HUX
Spoiler: show
I still dont care for Hux and i think he was horribly cast. I was hoping Ren would kill him so we dont have to deal with him anymore.

I agree it was a slap in the face but only in the sense it was shaking the audience out of their expectations, something the movie continues to do in escalating fashion for the rest of its running time. So, not a slap in the way you think (i.e. an insult).

I get the first scene critique. It's funny (i thought), but it does undermine a character who can't afford to lose any dignity. Hux remains the weakest link by far, though he was more enjoyable to watch in this one, and I look forward to seeing his dynamic with Kylo in the third film

Again, we knew nothing about where the Emperor came from in the OT and it's fine, because it's not the Emperor's story. It's not actually relevant to the plot and would be distracting if we found out. It would steal focus,
and there is already a lot of characters and story.

Are you excited to learn Han Solo's backstory? If the answer is yes then so be it- maybe you just like to know everything. But otherwise the key to whether or not a story should spend time on that sort of history is really whether or not it is central to your primary characters and plot. The new trilogy is not about snoke. Snoke's role is to be a corrupting figure for Kylo Ren and to be a figure for him to overthrow, and his history is completely irrelevant for that. Rey's lineage, on the other hand, was vital to her character and understanding of self, so revealing that is important.

I agree it was a slap in the face but only in the sense it was shaking the audience out of their expectations, something the movie continues to do in escalating fashion for the rest of its running time. So, not a slap in the way you think (i.e. an insult).
Spoiler: show
Just remember Yoda in Dagobah when we first meet him. Its the same stuff. Star Wars has had this ridiculousness in it before. That scene was right in line with the personality of Poe. It was great.
Spoiler: show
But its also stupid...Hux is answering him??? WHAT? that guy should have been dead....
Spoiler: show
He has always been a preening cur eager to show his superiority. Snoke says as much when he’s talking to Kylo about him. His reaction to Poe fell right in line with his character.

The flame comes later

good point with Yoda, and it works great with Poe. It's just that Hux can't afford to be the butt of people's jokes, since he is somehow like second or third in command of the First Order and we don't know why
Spoiler: show
This is where the reliance on the new novels to fill in backstories hurts the movies. Hux’s father created the stormtrooper conditioning program and was one of the small group of former Imperials who started the First Order after their final defeats at Endor and Jakku. So there’s some nepotism there plus Snoke knows he can easily control him.

I will say its better than TFA in some things, but i do miss the real props and characters from the last one. CGI characters suck.
There were two beautiful moments though.
Spoiler: show
Snoke´s ship being cracked in two...beautiful. All silent.Amazing....And the red and white attack of the Resistance

I’m sure we’ll find out but I’m guessing they used a 100% real puppet for Yoda. He looked like he just came off the Empire set.

They did. There were reports that the stage was built for it and was seen on set.

Been reading and thinking about this a lot since I saw it last night. My initial reaction was one of confusion, but that is quickly turning into one of admiration. This movie subverted several of the plot points/story beats of previous entries have followed. That alone makes it feel different. Different can lead to mixed reactions and I think you're seeing that play out in this thread. It's not a perfect film, that may be impossible to make with huge blockbusters these days given how many masters they must serve.
Spoiler: show
Loved:
-Luke's whole arc. It was poetic. Here I was hoping for some epic display of his powers destroying all sorts of shit, but his Force projection ended up being way cooler and more powerful than that. Snoke was able to bridge Kylo and Rey, but Luke went way beyond that.
-Yoda dealing out pearls of wisdom three decades after his death.
-Kylo Ren. It is so refreshing to have a villain in a blockbuster be this compelling/conflicted. It helps that Adam Driver is an incredible actor. Him not firing on Leia was so expected, but played so perfectly by Driver.
-Holdo. What started off as a cliche "good guy" antagonist to our main characters turned into a beautiful moment/throwback to the past with Leia and as character development for Poe.
-Snoke's demise. An excellent surprise and a very cool fight sequence. I hope we learn more about his backstory, but the trilogy was never really about him.
-Poe. Oscar Isaac is just so damn charismatic even when he doesn't have much to work with.
-More Force lore/powers/concepts to chew on.
-The callbacks to the prequels.
-Luke and Kylo's confrontation.
-The new worlds and aliens.
-The hyperdrive into Snoke's ship. The theater audibly gasped.
-The filmmaker making fun of Hux.
-BB-8 making coin noises when he rolled around.
-The mentioning of fuel and having it be such a central plot point. Felt like Battlestar Galactica to me, which was really cool. A little far fetched to be such a long sequence though.
-Benicio Del Toro's character. You exactly what kind of character he was from the beginning, loved it.
-Rey not being a Skywalker. Thank goodness.
-Crait.
Lots, lots more. Lots to chew on and digest.

Not so much:
-Finn's whole side mission. Space Vegas was cool, but ultimately not necessary to the plot. Seemed like it was there to just give Finn something to do. I'm not really sold on his character yet either although he was much more bearable in this one versus Force Awakens.
-Leia's Mary Poppins moment. Seemed sudden and they didn't really do anything about it later in the film.
-BB-8 being Chopper. Piloting the AT-ST was funny, but silly. It works in a cartoon, not so much here.
-The New Order not being more creative in how they chased the Rebel Fleet.

Yeah, he looked like the guy from Empire...i wasnt refering to him but to everything they did in the casino city...those weird horses, the people playing in the casino, the crystal foxes...they look weird and they will age poorly. Also the little fella playing with BB8 in the casino felt like a scene from the prequels.UGH.
