Also, I didn't mean my post as a knock at them. I was just surprised to (incorrectly) see the first three albums account for that high of a percentage of overall sales here.

Yeah you're right. The CD came out toward the end of '94 but that special was MTV's eulogy for him.
Regardless, it really is a high point in music.

You might be thinking of In Utero. It sold less than 200,000 in its first week (compared to Vs' million) and had yet to get anywhere near the two million mark when the news broke. It immediately shot back into the top 20, and stayed there a good long while.
"Oh, he died? Well, I guess it's a good record, now, and I need to have it."

It is a good record though. A great one. Consumers are just stupid. I bet Walk on the Wild Side is being downloaded so much right now.

In Utero's pretty terrific. Rape Me, Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, All Apologies, Heart Shaped Box... I love that album.
The performance of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" off Unplugged is crazy good.

Reed's catalog of albums sold 3,000 last week -- up 607% from the less than 1,000 the week previous. Reed was also a member of the band the Velvet Underground, which sees its album sales rise to 3,000 as well -- up by 236%.
His best selling album in the last week was "Transformer," with 1,000 sold (up 527%). The Velvet Underground's largest seller was its 1967 debut "The Velvet Underground & Nico," with 1,000 (up 146%).
In terms of digital songs, Reed sold 17,000 downloads last week -- up from 2,000 the week previous (a gain of 590%). The Velvet Underground's song sales grew to 5,000 -- up from 1,000 the week previous (a gain of 410%).
Reed's largest selling song last week was also his biggest chart hit on the Billboard Hot 100, "Walk On the Wild Side." It sold 6,000 downloads (up by 729%) and debuts at No. 38 on the Rock Digital Songs chart. "Walk On the Wild Side" reached No. 16 on the Hot 100 in 1973.

As a point of comparison, Arcade Fire is expected to sell around 130K for their new album (although I saw an Amazon deal recently which could bump it up). The buzz around this album, atleast from where I stand, is deafening, I'm actually very surprised that they aren't topping PJ and becoming the biggest album of the year. Music industry is indeed a pile of ashes, but from the rock landscape, I thought they'd be much bigger. I've got to find time to listen to Reflektor properly, seems like something that requires undivided attention.
