You're right. Ours not to reason why, ours but to do and die while claiming the sky.

Re: The Running Thread
I gave blood yesterday and was trying to decide if a really slow run would be okay. My legs were feeling fairly stiff so I was on the fence. I started googling advice and ran across a lot of articles discussing how giving blood can affect your ability to run quite a bit, sometimes up to two weeks after. I had no clue, and it really sucks because I was hoping to donate more often.

Re: The Running Thread
I tried on some Hoka's and they felt great, except that my right foot is oddly wider than my left and the toe space (or whatever that's technically called) just wasn't enough.

Re: The Running Thread
My left knee has been, medically speaking, a bit funky for the last year. I don't know what's going on.
Last winter I noticed that sometimes when I would get up from a chair and step to the side I would feel a shooting pain on the outside of it. Or if I took an awkward step going up (not down) a flight of stairs, same thing. Sometimes the shock of it would make me stumble or feel like my knee was giving out. Then I ran all spring and summer, trained for and finished a marathon, hiked, biked, etc. without any issues.
Now the knee thing is back. I suspect that I messed it up by switching shoes right after the marathon, going from the zero drop Altras which put more stress on the calves and achilles, to the higher stack Hokas which put more stress on the knees. That, and basically not doing any strength or core training all summer. I know from experience that a weak core means weak hips and glutes, which often leads to knee issues.
(And to be totally honest, while I haven't weighed myself since the pandemic started, I've probably put on 20 pounds or so. Not in my danger zone yet, but definitely heavier than I was when I started running a few years ago.)
So, no more running for the rest of the year and maybe into next year. Just biking (fat- and stationary-) and strength training. Maybe a class at the Y? Yoga? Cross Fit? Water aerobics?

Re: The Running Thread
Hope you get that figured out, ghost. I love seeing your runs on Strava.
I know from experience, the high stack shoes do something to my back and right knee almost immediately after a run. I sidelined my 8mm Bostons at the beginning of the year and never looked back.

7 miles @ 8:45 pace.
Been a long time since I've done that. Feeling really good about this race next Thursday.

193 ft is my current route. I’m going without walking at all now, past two times. Hills are a big challenge.lennytheweedwhacker wrote:I hate hills. What’s your normal elevation gain?tree_ wrote:5k in 34:07, still hilly

Without walking on just the hills, or the whole 5k? Impressive either way.tree_ wrote:193 ft is my current route. I’m going without walking at all now, past two times. This blood donation drain is for the birds. I managed two miles yesterday at a very mediocre pace. I'd like to try three tomorrow, but will settle for two and a half.

7 miles is the perfect distance at that pace. Almost an hour on the dot. That's a run I could do every day.epilogue wrote:7 miles @ 8:45 pace.

Armed with a Google image search of the musculoskeletal system surrounding the knee, I'm diagnosing myself with IT band syndrome.washing machine wrote:Hope you get that figured out, ghost. I love seeing your runs on Strava.

Re: The Running Thread
This thread is an inspiration and a motivation, so let me share some success while I ride out this runner's high today.
At the beginning of the year I set a goal to run 500 miles in 2021. Sort of an arbitrary number. Good and round, but also many more miles than I have ever run in a year. Consistency was the idea. Something I've always struggled with.
Towards the middle of the year I was lagging behind pace by double digits. Frustrating, considering I had not taken more than one week off up to that point.
Something clicked in those hot summer months and I upped mileage gradually. I have enjoyed the hell out of every single one of these miles. Running has never been more fun for me than this year.
Thrilled to have crossed that arbitrary 500 with over a month to go. I don't plan to stop.
Half marathon training starts in January.

I had a goal of 1200 miles for this year but I'm going to fall well short.

Thanks guys. This often feels like the sanest thread this side of the food forum, and I'm happy to ride in it with y'all.
Ghost, I definitely wouldn't call that marathon you did "falling short" this year. Kudos
