That's some wild ignorant shit right there.

Do they really believe that through all of this capricious chaos companies like Tesla, Nike and Apple are suddenly going to bring all their manufacturing facilities to the US?

Most of these top line companies are just going to find ways to ride out this stupid one term administration and quietly gear up for when the adults get back in charge in 2028/9.

Was nice of Trump to proclaim that it's a good time to buy shares and then a couple hours later pause all these tariffs bar China. Sounds very legal.

There was a uniform and palpable lighthearted frustration with the chaos in the Federal government, but also a shared view that it would provide no excuses for failure of our state initiatives to grow our economy.
May I request an expansion on this thought?
where we are right now -- a huge blanket tariff on China, and a 90-day stay for everyone else -- is the best-case happy medium we could hope for.
This summary does not at all describe where we are right now.

I’m not really trying to make a point, I am trying to understand your perspective on this because it is built, in part, on information and insights that I am not privy to.

But regarding tariffs, yes, it is not an accurate assessment of the tariff situation. The pause did not apply to the 25% tariffs on Mexico or Canada, or the general 10% tariffs.

Beyond that, I’m just interested in hearing your perspective specifically about the anticipated ability to increase state GPD, because the little slice of knowledge I do have runs contrary to it (but is recognizably a tiny slice).

My memory tells me you’re in Montana, so also I might just be misremembering where you are.

“Average effective tariff rates” in that graph reminds me of the economics lesson that goes “Bill Gates walks into a Taco Bell after the nine employees who work there open it for the day. He’s the only customer at the moment. What’s the average net worth of people in the store?”

Thank you. That’s very insightful, and it’s a lot of information I didn’t know.

What led me to ask was: healthcare makes up 12% of Montana’s GDP, and around 15% of its employment. Compare this with 4% for mining/quarrying/oil/gas combined.

Montana’s healthcare system, like a lot of rural states, is heavily dependent (both directly and indirectly) on federal spending that is about to contract in unprecedented ways. And I know because I work for an organization that owns a lot of Montana hospitals, that many were already struggling. A lot of jobs were saved by the Medicaid expansion.

I’m sure that a lot of other industries are also likely to be impacted by the state of things (some 60,000 jobs are dependent on tourism, for example). And I will admit that I am a lot more skeptical than you are that the tariffs are going to be successfully leveraged to produce gains of any kind.

So it’s one thing to talk about mitigating the impact of things, but it felt counterintuitive to me to talk about state-level economic growth when such structurally massive elements of that economy are about to enter into a state of profound negative flux.
