I gave up on the avocado record cos it was literally too painful to listen to it was all so sharp and sore in the ears ( is treble the word?) so I might hear it differently than you. But it’s not the dirty deep thudding sexy drum sound I woulda wanted. And the killer about that is that sound would be matts perfect realm. I want a Steve albini live kinda drum production. The only thing he wanted to make certain was that the second album playback in the theater would NOT have a video component, only visual, "with lights or something."

They've clearly hired someone so that they can remain as hands-off as possible, which is surprising to me, in a way, since they're singularly responsible for their own cottage industry.

Thanks for rehashing that interview. I also don’t begrudge the guys for wanting to prioritize their families, nor for their contextualizing their music as a live experience rather than a recorded one (though I agree with others that it doesn’t have to be that way).

Where I diverge sharply is that entire outlook does not preclude making an album that sounds like a band in a room; on the contrary, you’d think it would support that approach. Yet here we are.

I’m kind of hoping the upcoming Stern set will serve as a good alternative for people like me. “Normal functioning humans,” as dime put it!

I don't even really think how prolific they are is much of an issue; since Riot Act, we've mostly gotten a record every 3-4 years, which is standard for bands after they enter their second and third decade (the bizarre one was the wait between LB and Gigaton, though we know now it seems like they started a record with O'Brien during that time that they scrapped).

It's more the "we'll go in for 10 days, and then finish it up with one more week two years later" thing; maybe they can get great results out of that, but that seems like a situation where you wouldn't get the benefits of either trying to catch inspiration in a bottle quickly, or sit with something, experiment with it, and craft it over a long period of time.

I think it's notable that after the S/T record, which seemed more like a big album rollout than anything they'd done since the start of their career, they never did it again, even for albums that were arguably more commercial. It just doesn't seem like something they want to put a lot of time in, which is fine, I think.

I think he even said “with lyrics or something”.

Makes sense as that’s how it was for HIS listening parties in LA/London.

I can understand being over all the gimmicks. I am after 30 years. Just give us the music.

Honestly as soon as the album is ready they should spool up for a month and release it. No need for all of this.

I doubt there’s any real return on investment for them to market it. Only the hardcore are gonna actually buy the CD or vinyl anyways. The rest will check it out via stream, and not in enough numbers to matter. I guess they could reel in a few new fans but there’s a much better chance of them doing that by simply touring more.

I agree with you, which...makes it all the more perplexing that the idea of quick releases without the need to rev up the big machine is such a foreign idea to them.

If they are targeting us die hard fans specifically, then yes I agree. If they intend to reach a wider audience, then absolutely not.

If there is a high quality leak that’s out after Tuesday, I’ll listen to it, but not before. I do not get the appeal of listening to a low quality crap sounding leak at all. Why ruin the experience and first impression of the record?

they've just not had any interest in keeping up with modern release trends, apparently (and, also apparently, only a very superficial interest in keeping up with modern recording trends)
