It's pretty crazy, right?
Yeah, it's so bizarre. Totally speaks to what I was talking about weeks back about how Hollywood rarely lets an artist do what they want to do. This is obviously extreme. But it sucks that this kind of thing happens as often as it does.
But, yeah, super engaging and fascinating story. Stanley is a really strange dude. I'd LOVE to see a full documentary just about him. All the stuff about his warlock friend and his magic spells was so fucking interesting.

Yeah. To be honest, I had virtually zero sympathy for Stanley's plight, though. The guy clearly had no idea how to interact with others. He kinda doomed himself. Which is a shame, because I love Dust Devil and his version of Moreau looked pretty awesome.

That's what's so great about this story. It's not like Gilliam and Lost in La Mancha, which is just heartbreaking. Lost Soul isn't a sad story per se. It's not a woe is me kinda thing. And he doesn't seem to reflect on it that way either. Fairuza seems to be the only one with an open wound about the whole thing.
I've never seen any of Stanley's films, but I do think his take on the Moreau story looked really interesting. I think what the producer says near the end about a smaller film with unknown talent is really what Stanley needed at that time. Could have been really interesting.

Yeah, casting Brando was a terrible, terrible decision. You are just asking for a nightmare at that point.
Have you seen the movie? Even back then when it first came out (I saw it in theaters) and I was obsessed with Brando I thought it was one of the worst casting decisions I'd ever seen. Made absolutely zero sense to me.

Oh yeah, I've seen it. Hell, I own the Blu-ray. The finished product is just as batshit insane as you'd think. I actually enjoy it for its craziness. There's nothing else like it.
And yeah, VinylGuy, DD got hacked. The director's cut came out on DVD for the first time in 2006. I bought it when it came out and was an instant fan. Great DVD set, too.
