It was awful. I only listened to that album once. Just tried again and at 0:36 I've switched off.

my favourite thing about the DM riff is that the last note of the cycle goes a half-step up instead of a (more predictable) step down

Yes. Lean into the unpredictable, Pearl Jam. I think part of the Brendan O'Brien problem on BS and LB is that he leaned into predictable, and kind of encouraged the band to as well.
