Which of those involves a nurse scraping the back of my skull?
I thought you worked at the health department for Christ’s sake.

Health departments do things that aren't COVID, and they types of COVID tests have no impact on my work.
Maybe not, but you should at least know the difference between what nasal and nasopharyngeal mean.
Surprisingly, that has not yet come up in 15 years of auditing the proper storage and handling of refrigerated biologicals.

Children between the ages of 10 and 19 are more likely to spread the coronavirus within a household than younger children or adults, according to a new epidemiological study from South Korea. The findings, released on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, come as countries across the world grapple with the heated question of how and when to reopen schools amid fears of a resurgence in cases when students return to the classroom. The researchers traced and tested more than 59,000 people who had contact with 5,706 South Korean Covid-19 patients between January 20 and March 27 and found that, on average, 11.8 percent of household contacts tested positive for the virus. For people who lived with infected older children, 18.6 percent tested positive for the virus within about 10 days after the initial case was detected — the highest rate of transmission among the age groups studied. Children under the age of 10 spread the virus at the lowest rate, though researchers warned that the figure may have been impacted by school closures and could change when they reopen.

Stop following the science, Rob. These kid's lives we're talking about, Rob. South Korea's basically made up anyway, Rob.

We’ve reached the point in the pandemic where Bi_3 cracks.

So what the study demonstrated was:

- Children aged 10-18 appeared to spread the infection to a greater degree than adults did.

- Infected children under the age of 10 averaged a 5% infection rate of household contacts, which is about half the household infection rate for adults.

Which is a great demonstration of why reopening schools for the under-10 crowd is safe, so long as you have firm control over infection rates going in. That 5% household infection rate means flare ups will be very manageable, if you can catch them early and contact trace them. It’s a harbinger of the same level of fuckup that reopening early was if, say, you send kids back to school while tens of thousands of them have or are exposed to the virus.

Assuming the results from the variant that hit SK during that time frame are applicable to the variant spreading in the southern US now

Agreed, but “technically, we might not know a thing about infection rates” is also not an argument in favor of reopening schools.

Any of you doomers see the good news out of England today on the med/vax front?

Yeah. It’s hopeful, but it’s also phase one testing. A phase 2 clinical trial for a vaccine averages about two years. This one will be significantly expedited, but some aspects of that process simply cannot be shortened. So let’s be realllllly generous and hopeful, and say that this is our future vaccine and it’s got a 6 month journey left to approval. At that point, you still have the months and months it takes to manufacture and deliver. And also the president is currently trying to gut federal funding for vaccine delivery.

It’s hopeful for the second half of 2021 (if we’re still being generous and hopeful), but no vaccine is going to fix the stubborn mistakes we make today.

They're already manufacturing doses. They're betting on the vaccine being effective and choosing to scale production now. Scratch out a new timeline, please.

Phase 3 human trials have also already started in different parts of the world so I guess we don't have to brood for two years in the lab before getting past phase 2?

If you’re going to bother hitting the reply button, at least don’t be lazy.

I’d love to be wrong. We’d all love for a vaccine to come up suddenly and be widely available in the blink of an eye. It’s just really, really early for a victory lap.

Apparently the UK has secured the first few batches of that anyway. We won't see it until Europe is immune.

That's not true. Astrazeneca or whatever is involved. They are already producing this thing. I realize none of this stuff gets headlines because it's not scary but it's pretty disappointing nobody seems to have a clue.
