I just saw a preview of the Kinvara 13s. I really wish verb was here to discuss them. The yellow colorway looks good, but the seafoam looks amazing.

It's possible I'll like these even more than my 11s but they aren't out til April.

I was planning on going today, but it's just too cold and wet. And windy. The rest of the week should be really nice so i'll make up for it.

One week of training down and running feels... different.

I covered roughly the same mileage I am used to, maybe a little less, and I ran the same amount of days a week that I normally do, but it just felt.. I dunno, like a routine I guess?

Fun while I'm out, but definitely less fun than just playing around building miles. I think I'll have more fun once the weekend long runs start getting long. And I definitely feel like I'll be a ball of emotions once I get closer to the race in March.

For now, I build the base.

Early data shows that I might be able to crack 2 hours for a half if I train right. I guess I won't really know until I get to some longer tempo runs later this month, but I'm definitely running a faster pace for 3-4 miles than I expected, and in a way thay feels super sustainable.

Big side cramp around 1.5 miles in. Tried to just go slow, but had to stop at 1.85. Sucks, but I’ll try again tomorrow.

I wonder what would have happened if you had walked a for a bit and covered the distance?

I’ve been able to do that occasionally when it cramps. I don’t think it would have helped much today though because I had a mile back to my house and walking it only subsided when I was about .20 from home.

Set a new personal best for 4 miles at 37:50. It definitely felt slower than that. Not sure what to make of that though...

That's awesome! Do you feel like you could sustain that pace for more distance?

Hard to say. My miles were:
8:48
9:31
10:11
9:27

I really didn't think I was going that fast on the first mile, and intentionally went slower on the third to hopefully save up some energy for the last mile. I think if I walked maybe .20 or .25 to begin mile five I maybe could keep a ten minute pace the rest of the way. I'd like to try something like that soon.

I know I could probably slow down the first mile intentionally, but almost all my best times are when the first mile is the fastest. Seems weird, but I dunno. Thank you for your support and encouragement, btw.

My big breakthrough when I figured out I could go more than a 5k came when I consciously used that first mile as a slow warmup. The first mile always sucks for me, and one day I realized that getting through it with minimal effort was going to feel the same as getting through it pushing it. Push too soon and I'm at an energy deficit before I really get going. Awesome that you can perform well going that hard out of the box, but that doesn't sound sustainable for longer distances. Everyone's different though, so do what works.

We've got to. It's the running thread after all.

Do you nod at other runners on your route?

Yeah it goes counter to everything I've read that should occur. The times I've purposely gone slow the first mile it didn't feel much different on my body and breathing. My big thing now is getting that last mile to feel like the first. I generally try to finish the last .15 or so really strongly, but even when I don't I still have to walk more in the last mile than the others.

Yes I do. I can't help myself.

Do you have long term goals for your running?

I suppose that would be to do a 10k in a decent time. I know I could do one now, but with more walking than I'd like and my time would probably be like 1:08.

And continue to improve my 5k time. I'm hoping doing more distance helps on the 5k as well. It's been a few months since I just ran 5k, so I am a little curious how fast I can do one right now.

Thank you. Hopefully I can commit to getting out there more each week since I've been seeing so much improvement recently. Would love for January and February to not be freezing also.
