Really like and agree with what I am reading above.
These guys are getting old and they are different people than they were 20 years ago, 10 years ago. It must very hard to get in a room and drum up something completely unique and different. I think they want to keep the band going, but don''t feel the need or itch to really push the envelop. They have more/other interests... family...projects...and they ain't young men. I'm almost 37, have one kid, a job and a band...it is hard! It's hard to juggle everything, even if you have pile of cash.
Neil is his own guy, so he works on his clock.
Bands like the Stones Tom Petty, and U2, their fans have different expectations. I "think" (because I don't listen to either band) their fans couldn't care less if they put out new music. They are probably happy to hear the same tunes again and again. Yes, maybe throw in a newb here and there. However, my die hard U2 fans are still bumping the greatest hits and not complaining about it.

Not his words, but that was the sentiment of it.
So I guess he went Bono-level "I'm the guy who doesn't get the appeal of my own music" with it instead.
Sometimes I think the press's insistence on only praising the band as a live act was the worst thing that ever happened to them. Cos they sure listened.
Yeah I remember that. I think it was some of the bonus footage on one of their dvds? (PJ20 maybe?)

U2 has pretty consistently been heavy on their new albums every time they've hit the road throughout their entire career. I'm sure the casual fans listen to the same 20-25 songs, but they have as big of a segment of their fanbase that expects and desires new music as any artist of that stature.

So I'm probably summarizing a summary someone posted here after watching it. Figures.

How much movement is there between Bruce Springsteen's albums and his fan's appreciation of them? Though he's a solo artist I suspect Springsteen is probably the best analogy we have to pearl jam right now--moreso than U2, at any rate.

Eddie Vedder in 2013 wrote:At this point, Pearl Jam has become a real touring band. When you're sitting down to put an album together, do you guys try to pick songs that will translate best to live performance?
There's an element of that, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. Because then you might end up writing songs that really are meant to be played live. Like, they become that piece of furniture that only fits in a giant room. At the same time, you can always boil it down to this: if it sounds good around a campfire, it's probably going to sound good anywhere. You do want to string enough songs together in a way that you really feel that you can play the whole record and that they're all going to stand up in that habitat. Because at this point, that is kind of our natural habitat.
Are you very critical of the work while making an album?
Everyone in the group is doing that. We're having conversations about it, which have really become quite fascinating, because the communication level in our group is pretty darn healthy. You can fight for things. You can have someone brush off something. I might brush off the end of a guitar solo, like, "Eh, I don't know. Maybe hit that one more time?" And Mike can tell me, "There's a direction to that, you just haven't seen it through 3-D glasses." Which means I need to give it a few more listens and see it through his viewpoint. I think the key is to be hypercritical as you're making the record, and then that goes into hyperdrive, critically speaking, when you're finishing it. Then the album is its own thing. The furniture is made and arranged, you shut the door, and other people can occupy the space. Once it's done, it's done.

After reading that I would only reiterate that they need a stronger producer leading the conversation and directing the criticism.

What drives me crazy is this business model approach to making music, which is...
1. Don't get together to play unless you are making a record. All projects have to have a stated output prior to any implementation.
2. Don't make a record unless you are going to tour.
3. If you're going to tour, then you have to plan and schedule it now. This will provide your recording work with an end date.
4. Now you have a project which is going to help support another project. Better create a Sharepoint and set a budget, dude.
You are literally rich musicians with your own basement studios. Just get together and make music. Make a record just to make one. Don't even share it with people. Who cares? You don't have to have 20 ideas to turn into 12 songs and one of them is definitely the single guys in order to make music.
And the thing is, when you make music just out of the pure love of being able to do so...you can be 70+ years old and still be pulverizing the hell out of this thing. You end up feeling every moment, instead of thinking about how to transition to the bridge and where to add your flashy little lick.

Perhaps this clip from the PJ20 extras (jump to 5:01 for the section I'm thinking of):

I don't know, that sounds all great and pure and stuff but totally fails to take into account how real life actually works when you've been in a long term relationship with 4 other dudes and a man named Boom. I certainly believe they need to re-think how they approach their art but I disagree that they're anywhere near as craven as you often make them out to be.

Jeff is in Montana, right? Are the others in Seattle?

Stone, Mike and Ed are at least based out of here. I think Mike is in LA a lot of the time too, and Ed in Hawaii and private parties all over the globe.

I think the main problem that none of us have addressed is Jeff hung out with bodysnatcher. That had to kill his mojo at least somewhat.

Before he hung out with me, he was just known as "Legs"

I bet bodysnatcher called him "Ah-ment" instead of "Ay-ment" and Jeff got pissed.

Yea, though it seems like Ed travels a lot; probably has a few homes he bounces to for surfing/music/etc.
Not sure exactly who the "craven" comment is directed at?
Sorry, I meant that for my good friend, McParadigm. Anytime I'm scolding someone for being too mean to Edward Vedder and gang, it's directed at him. I didn't mean for you to get stranded, caught in the crossfire.
