Can't stay. It really makes my brain hurt how indoctrinated people justify their bullshit.

The only reason an intelligent man will remain religious is to appease his old-fashioned elders or to get that prim and proper pussy. There's no other explanation. They're just being nice to people who weren't as blessed with critical thought during their formative years as they perhaps should have been.

Speaking a devout atheist (as you know), I'm totally on your side in this one, Rangi. All that kind of ignorant, judgmental derision accomplishes is furthering stereotypes of atheists being angry assholes.

Yeah, a bit more. Christianity is the foundation of our whole society, people have been believing those stories for thousands of years. That, I feel, lends it a certain credibility that Scientology just doesn't have (I feel the same way about mormonism).

I think you would struggle to find a religion that sounds more made up than Scientology.

Just because it's been around longer and more people believe it, it doesn't make it any less crazy - just more dangerous. If Scientology survives as long as Christianity, you know what people are going to say about it? "People have been believing those stories for thousands of years. That, I feel, lends it a certain credibility that [INSERT NEW RELIGION HERE] just doesn't have."

Also, saying Christianity is "the foundation of our whole society" is just...yeah, no. No, it's not.

But anyway, Tom Cruise is one of the few true movie stars we have left. Y'all motherfuckas should cherish that shit.

I lived in a whale.

The sea parted so a few people could pass but then swallowed everyone else.

I wrestled an angel.

I eat my god and drink his blood every Sunday.

There's the dad, God. The son, Jesus. And then there's the Holy Spirit. But they are all the same thing.

Yep. That sounds completely sane and not made up at all.

I'm not saying Christianity isn't nuts, just that it's part of our cultural heritage, which makes it easier (and more understandable) to believe. Scientology, on the other hand, is very clearly a load of bullshit made up by a con man. Someone being a Christian doesn't make me lose respect for them, but someone being a scientologist does.

Also, Scientology's story is definitely crazier than Christianity's:
Xenu (/ˈziːnuː/),[1][2][3] also called "Xemu", was, according to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, the dictator of the "Galactic Confederacy" who 75 million years ago brought billions[4][5] of his people to Earth (then known as "Teegeeack") in a DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes, and killed them with hydrogen bombs. Official Scientology scriptures hold that the thetans (immortal spirits) of these aliens adhere to humans, causing spiritual harm

Frankly, this is nothing more than a massive, hypocritical double standard derived from ages of dubious cultural credibility.

CHRISTIANS LITERALLY WORSHIP A ZOMBIE! That's not off the chain insane to you?!

Like you just admitted, you understand/accept one over the other because it's been around longer. That's it. The fact that anyone actually literally believes in the stories of Christianity is bizarre to me. Faith is one thing, whatever. But if you believe a man died and came back from the dead then disappeared and might maybe probably come back one day and take some folks over to his place for a while before coming back for the others, I don't know what to tell you.
