The initial career trajectory of STP is similar to Radiohead. Debut album made them hugely famous, but pigeonholed them and it now sounds incredibly dated and derivative. They broke loose with their second album. Became more experimental with their third. But Wieland's constant problems put the kibosh on the public re-evaluation that they also should have had. It's amazing how many people have the completely wrong perception of them. Some douche on the Steve Hoffman Forum was comparing them to Creed and Nickleback, and I couldn't help but facepalm.

I feel they definitely have been pigeonholed. I am one who is guilty of doing that to them. I really do like Purple though, and it's been awhile since I last listened to that too. What I really need to do is revisit Tiny Music. I don't think I've heard it since 1999.

Agreed. Same can be said for PJ in some respects.

I'll readily admit that I'd mentally pigeonholed the band in a similar way, I was very much mistaken.

Just discovered that Press Play, the opening instrumental track on Tiny Music goes on for over 4 minutes on the recent MOV reissue. Very cool.

Somewhere above Creed/Nickleback and somewhere below Soundgarden/Nirvana. That's where they are in my mental catalogue.

They are a lot more diverse and gifted at melody than any of those bands. Comparing them to Soundgarden is like comparing The Beatles to Black Sabbath.

I was thinking in broader terms of "rock music" and "general era".

I'd also argue that the bodies of work of both Seattle bands are more diverse than that of STP. "Gift for melody" would also be a highly contentious stat line where those three bands are concerned.

Im actually enjoying Blaster a lot these days.

Beach Pop is really cool.

Tiny music was there true gem. I remember they went on a rock radio show in my back in late February in 96, they played tumble in the rough Big Bang bang and adhesive. I remember being blow away by adhesive and the dj afterwards just dismissed the song.

So it appears that Wieland had cardio-vascular disease and severe asthma, and he was touring the country loaded up on coke, meth and alcohol. If that isn't a death wish, I don't know what is.

Hey thanks guys. Because of this thread I gave No.4 another chance this week and yeah it is pretty damn good. Other than Altanta, Sour Girl and Down I hadn't listened to any of these songs since maybe a few weeks after it came out. I don't know why I dismissed it for so long.

I tried again with No4. I just don't get it.

I like Purple and Tiny Music much better than No.4. Sometimes I like Core and Shangri-La better too. It has a few great songs (Glide, Atlanta, Down) but the rest misses a bit more than it hits for me. I still mostly enjoy a straight through listen.
