Behind The Sun: The Official RHCP Thread.

Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

There’s simply a ceiling to the style. It is devoid of all creativity and been done to death. Maybe Chad is capable of more, but in this band it isn’t it.

In a world of Mars Volta and Katy Perry and Lady A, I'll take the drummer you just described any day of the week.
TMV is so much better than RHCP.

Their drummer is in Queens of the Stone Age now anyway, and he's badass.

1 - I probably wouldn't put Chad Smith among the "greatest of all time" but I do enjoy his playing
2- There's an entire world of nuance to any instrumental performance beyond just what time signature the song is in

Smith has a great groove. That’s his biggest asset. Great groove.

Dude, cmon man. As stated, he & Flea are a kick-ass rhythm section. How great they are is subject to interpretation (I think they're great), but to say kids can do what he does... I mean, maybe the best high schoolers can play some of his stuff after learning it, but that doesn't mean they're on par.

Let me guess, tree_, you probably don't think too highly of Ringo Starr either.

That’s what we’re telling you. He really is. Sure, his playing may seem simple, but he’s doing things most can’t do. Sure a high schooler may be able to play Under the Bridge, but they’re not gonna be able to add the groove he has. He’s top shelf man. And I don’t even really care for the Peppers.

Chad is wonderful.
He has so much groove and also can hit it hard as fuck. Of course, he is perfect for the Peppers, and specially for Flea.

I dig the jams, although once I saw them play search and destroy to finish a show and it kind of went off the rails. Californication tour.

Agree groove and ghost notes. Chad is the best for this band.

I aped his (and Eric Kretz's) style back in the day, so I think it is accessible (I had trouble with the Jack Irons PJ stuff).

I also think that I wouldn't be any where near excited for the new stuff if John didn't dip out 16 years ago. He was probably right to take a break after going all out on SA.
