Man, does "The Last Jedi" deliver. Rian Johnson did all the things I've never dared wish for in a Star Wars movie: he flipped every sacred cow in the franchise upside down. From Luke cavalierly chucking his own lightsaber over his shoulder after Rey hands it to him, to her parents being absolute nobodies with no connection to the Skywalker family, the movie took every expectation I had and said, "Nah, how about we do this amazing thing instead?"

Everyone has something to do in this movie, and characters actually learn something about themselves, like what they're willing to do to win the war.

Kylo Ren is absolutely the best villain in Star Wars history (Vader had simple motivations and, while terrifying, could be considered one note -- FIGHT ME INTERNET), and Adam Driver brings a depth and complexity to a role that could have ended up incredibly Anakin-like.

And that Snoke throne room scene with Rey, y'all! Did you see that shit?

More than everything else I loved about "The Last Jedi," there's one simple concept that rang true: the Force is for everyone. I can't wait to see where Star Wars goes now that it's free of so many of its shackles.

Lol
Vader may be the GOAT, slow your roll. Top 3 for sure. I'd love if Kylo cracked that, but he's not there yet.
eh, he’s no Smaug

I would presume so. Weren’t they the ones in red Ben and Rey fought after Snoke’s death?
why aren't we talking about how sexy that scene was?
Spoiler: show
Rey dropping the lightsaber and then catching it was one of the coolest lightsaber moves ever.

No, I mean straight up sexy. The tension between them, the blood red backdrop. My goodness gracious.

Absolute favorite scene of the movie. I honestly did not think Snoke would be killed. I knew that Ren wouldn't strike rey down but my thought was he was oging to toss her the lightsaber and they would duel so as not to have to kill her.

I loved that they teamed up and mowed everyone down only to battle again themselves.

Really enjoyed the last twenty minutes.
Spoiler: show
A lot to say but for now: Relieved they didn't do the predictable, tired star wars arc with Kylo and have him turn to the lightside. Instead they double downed on his dark side elements and made him a more complex villain. Novel concept.

Rey's parentage is refreshing and that closing scene with the slave boy reinforces what they can do with Star Wars now. Episode 9 has a lot going for it now. Basically a clean slate to play with.

the kid at the end looking up at the ship going to hyperspace is a total echo of rey looking up at the ship leaving in TFA when shes cleaning the parts shes scavenged
she went on to have a big adventure...presumably this kid will too..

unless its just a metaphorical scene relating to the rebellion and jedi

That whole fight scene in Snoke's room was awesome.

The way Kylo killed Snope with that neat trick. The way Rey dropped the lightsaber and caught it. Superb.

The scene in the three is wonderful...he has to ask 2 or 3times why are *you* here? and shes deflecting with the resistance sent me, and his own insight and probably natural instincts are upending her purpose..

then he gets the truth out of her..and tells her you need a teacher..echoing exactly kylos saying to her in TFA but rejecting her rather than trying to woo her.

just brilliant.

This movie was a mixed bag. I liked some of the goofy stuff in the first half (Luke drinking green milk from an alien tit, sad porg face, etc.), and the Snoke death was pretty shocking, but they course-correct everything in the final act, which is a dull flurry of safe, bland choices.

Adam Driver, though. Holy shit. He is stellar. And he is endlessly compelling in this role. I could watch him all day. His physicality, his delivery - just spellbinding. And he seethed so much brooding sexuality that it made it all the more disappointing when Rey didn’t go with him in that crucial moment. What a letdown.

Also, Benicio Del Toro. Oh my god. He lights up the screen every second he’s on it. Too bad he’s paired with Boyega and that GODAWFUL Rose girl. Yikes. They are both so bad. As is Laura Dern in her curtain and horrific purple hair.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to wheel Carrie Fisher out of her nursing home and prop her up so she could wheeze her way through her lines ought to be ashamed of themself.

Isaac is kinda wasted. Most of the Luke stuff is a bore. And, again, the whole final act lands with a wet thud.

Overall: Meh. Better than TFA, but worse than any other SW movie.

That's very interesting. Thank you.

Agree 100% about the Driver paragraph. Amazing actor that lifts every scene. Rey going along would have been a million times better.

yeah this. rey isn't very sexy at all, but he was so sexy in that scene that he kinda made her a little sexy too.
