As it is, these songs sound more neutered than they should, I think they'd benefit from some actual sharp edges.
Nothing about Riot Act screams sharp edges or aggression to me. That was the whole critique of the album at the time, and I think it holds up as critique. It's just that after S/T came out we stopped looking for those moments in Riot Act and understood it wasn't what the album was trying to evoke.
Yeah, those things aren't there because that's how the band (and particularly Eddie) were approaching the songwriting and particularly the performances on that album, and the production evocatively (and accurately) caught what the band was doing. Kasper caught precisely what the band was doing and how they sounded as good as they ever have been. If they approached these songs with that same intensity and tried to capture that mood as well as they captured the mood they caught with Riot Act, I'd think they'd sound a whole lot better.
Ah, gotcha. I see what you mean. It'll be interesting to see how much different the Evans mix sounds. But I don't know. For Dark Matter in particular I think there is a relentless intensity to it. It's overwhelming, but that's kind of the point. It may not work for every track, but this is one where I think it does, quite well. Of course a different approach might have sounded even better.
I think Vs. like production would be perfect. Animal/Go/Blood have that intense sound that would fit Dark Matter/Running perfectly and the mid tempo stuff would also work perfectly with a sound like Daughter/Elderly Woman
yup, looks like that's the one!

to be fair, almost any record would be improved if it sounded like Vs. But probably especially Dark Matter

Minus 30 and halve it. That's roughly the equivalent in Celsius.
