If he loses he'll run again in 4 years. We'll never be rid of him.

What percent chance do you guys give a Biden victory followed by a botched economic recovery prompting a doubling down of Trumpism in 2024?

I fully expect a Republican return to fiscal conservatism and obstructionism, with the hope that two years of flaccid economic recovery will produce election gains in 2022.
Some form of Trumpism will be a part of the GOP for a long time to come simply because all of the nurturing components are still there...distrust of traditional news, an insular media bubble, hyper-nationalism, insecurity about changing social norms and power structures, etc. I’d even expect it to get worse in deep red states during a Biden presidency. But the idea that the movement could become viable again on a national level in the next 5 or 6 years is just terribly unlikely. And that’s the problem the republican party will face: the Trump-adoring no-compromise populist movement will have the power to decide Republican primaries in a lot of swing states, but won’t have the power or the numbers to win an election without significant moderate coalition building.

Trump's failures come from his incompetence and insanity, not his policy. Democrats will overplay their hand, as both parties always do, and the republicans will come back to make the same mistakes they always do.
Conservatism doesn't win by compromising. That's the left's game. Conservatives lose when they try to play it. Obviously the Republican platform will evolve, but the idea that they can only win by being light democrats is lefty wishful thinking.

That's comforting and well reasoned. Dare I say I'm looking forward to the pendulum swing?

I do think there will be a few rounds of "trying to fit in", a la McCain and Romney, but it won't get very far.

This was meant for McP before Burt gave his thought, but I guess it could apply to both posts.

Democrats win. Republicans sabotage them to get elected. Republicans super fuck the country. Repeat.
