I do find the stories from Bune and McParadigm fascinating as it's part of the US I just never saw. Particularly the viewpoint of people who have moved away and have some distance before seeing what those areas are like today.

I definitely haven't seen any recovery where I'm from, but it was mostly a ghost town before I was born. A lot of construction companies moved in after Katrina, all of course using cheap illegal labor, and took what few jobs there were. It's not like any of that money filtered back into the towns (talk about trickle down economics.)

Obviously there's a level of hyperbole in the statement, but the differences are often to a similar degree as those that are separate countries in other parts of the world (touring through the countries in the UK has a similar degree of differentiation to an outsider as touring the Southwest US was for me).

I guess it's true of any geographically broad area as there are certainly parts of Australia that are worlds apart, but the combination of geographic size, population size, population mix and diversity of influences historically (native, French, Spanish, English) seems to make the mental construct of a homogenous "American" or "American Experience" impossible to pin down. So for me it's just interesting to read some of those other American experiences that I didn't get first hand whilst living there.

I'm sure people could say something similar about other large countries like India (for instance) but I haven't personally been there.
