It's Sunday. Star Wars will be released this week. Goodness gracious me! It's going to be great, too. I have felt it. (Strange McP has not). I'm a 6 year old in a 38 year old's body, excited beyond words and ready to be in awe. It's a great time to be alive. May the force be with you all.

The as good or better rankings have crept up to almost 50%

I am not expecting this to be as magical as the OT. How could it be? But as movies go I am expecting it to be as good or better, and this simply being good will be a huge disappointment. If this are not great (in the massively entertaining sense) I will be hugely disappointed

last night, i dreamt that i was watching the first hour of the force awakens. at one point, palpatine came back from the dead to sexually molest finn.

It's gonna be a comfortable mimicry of a story you already know, directed by someone who is superb with actors and good with action but adequate at best as a storyteller. It will feature some heartstrings-pulling character changes, practical effects, Star Wars noises, and JW music.

There is next to no chance that this will be anything less than a good, fun film. But the idea that the above combination might produce something as good as the original trilogy is laughable (although I'm sure there will be the usual overexcited "Guys Lightning Bolt Force Awakens is the best one in the whole set yeah I said it" hyperbole in the first few months after release).

You're about to get a solid, fun, rewatchable film called Star Wars. Why that wouldn't be enough for someone...why they would have to talk themselves into The Division Bell being not a good Pink Floyd record, but the best Pink Floyd record...I will never know.

If it's that and no super sized mind blowing big reveal combined with some innovative, unexpected story telling I will be a bit disappointed. I've stayed spoiler free, but if that's what spoilers reveal...yikes. Still for the all reasons you listed above, I will love this flick. It will be worth more than the cost of admission and that's a great thing.

Unrelated note: My wife wants to see this but wait till the 21. Do I see it myself on the 19th, earliest date I can go? I think so.

There's definitely going to be some sort of reveal; at this point, it'd be shocking and innovative to just create a character study.

Just relax and enjoy the fact that there is a new star wars movie with luke, and and leia.

It's because I want to believe I can go home again.

I don't think this needs to do anything new. If it just nails what I loved about the first films I will be satisfied. But it needs to nail them. Expectations (for me) will be much lower than this film since there won't be the same desire for recovery. I completely gave up on Star Wars. I've opened myself back up to something that was foundational to me. That raises emotional stakes and expectations.

I'm more the opposite, stip. this movie is the "big investment" recoup...meant be as inoffensive and safely played as possible. It is also likely to suffer from overreliance on JJ's stupid mystery box event.

I'm more curious to see what they do with it after that...when they feel safer and more in control of their new toy, will it become brilliant again, or will they turn it into trash?

Really, I think we will learn more about Disney Star Wars from rogue squadron then we will from this. Although it is being framed within the OT, it is the first of these movies that won't be almost exclusively asking itself "what would Star Wars do" as it makes decisions. It will show us how the new actually looks, rather than working hard to remind us of the old.

This is just like the buildup to a new pearl jam album

I don't think we are disagreeing here about what it will be. I actually want the 'safe movie' to reinvest me in the world with the passion I once had. I want something done well, but I am not ready to be challenged by it right now. It doesn't need to be new. Not yet. I want it to be old in a way that feels current. Like this is the logical follow up to Jedi that just happens to be coming out late.

Once I love the world again I'll care about exploring it

I want characters I care about, Ariel combat that blows me away, light saber fights that have an emotional payoff, a tone that is able to explore heavier themes without going 'dark', a story that is easy to follow without being stupid, and lots of familiar audio and visual iconography that feels organic and not pandering

And I want it expertly executed. At their core that's what the OT was that is capable of appropriation

Yes but I expect this to be a cutting edge film
