Maybe I need to see the movie again, but this is kinda how I think I feel. When it comes down to it, I love 3 of the movies, kinda like 2 of them, don’t like 3 of them, and undecided about 1.

Star Wars is kinda like my feelings towards Pearl Jam lately.

I was so pumped to see it, and then the logo and scroll came up and I didn’t have the heart racing I usually do. I wonder if I was just doomed from the start? Maybe the three SW movies in three years is taking its toll. It doesn’t feel like event cinema anymore.

Also, first SW movie where I was wondering if we were getting close to the end. I was actually wanting a SW movie to end soon.

Also, I thought that Luke would stay until episode 9 at least. Yes, he could come back as a force ghost, but I was hoping at least two episodes with him in normal human form. I get that this trilogy would be the passing of the torch, but do we have to kill off all the old characters? I feel like giving them finalities just cuts them out of SW forever.

I’m guessing chewie was nearby and she had a tracker on her he could follow.

I wasn’t planning on seeing it again in the theaters (a first) but maybe I’ll catch one more time to see if it sits better after the initial shock of the first viewing.

Other thoughts:

Yoda physically interacts with the “normal world” by using the Force(?) to ignite the tree. I guess with this new version of the Force, it’s possible. So I guess everyone that are force ghosts can come back and get jobs in the normal world, and interact like they aren’t even gone.

Does the final scene (with the child) indicate that the people can rise up and rebel against the first order?

Others have stated the kid used the force to get the broom? If that’s the case (I didn’t see any force using), does the final scene indicate that everyone can harness the force, or just that the people that are force sensitive will be able to come forward with their abilities, since Rey is going to bring the Force/ nuJedi back?

he did - and i think the later

granted i was a big fan on the first viewing, but i liked it even more the second time where i could watch the movie on its own terms without having to grapple with my preconceived expectations

yeah my pal just saw it again and said he liked it even more. i asked if it was because he didn't have to be concerned about if luke or leia would die and could just appreciate it for it is; he said yes.

It’s much better on subsequent viewings.

Hux said she took an escape pod. It's not a stretch to assume Chewie was nearby considering he dropped her off there.

I haven't had any time to internet over the last several days. So I haven't had a chance to read everyone's thoughts yet. I'm going to try and do that today during work, if I can.

Anyway, I saw this Thursday night at midnight. I've only had a chance to see it once so far. But first impression?

I goddamn love this movie. It's bold and risky and strange and completely unexpected. The movie should really be called Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi. There are things that might be the goofiest or dumbest things I've ever seen in Star Wars. But on the other hand, there are things that also rank among the most beautiful and power in the franchise so far, too.

I can only imagine that this will get better and better the more I watch it and think through the themes. I feel like this was a real "adult" Star Wars movie. Instead of bright-eyed adventurers, young people beginning their lives and finding their purpose in the galaxy. And this movie is all "grown up." This is a meditation on death and regret and a lot of really profound (for Star Wars) ideas like that.

As an aside, I think I've always given Stip a little grief for defending Han's arc in TFA... but I take all of that back. Certain real life events as well as Luke's journey in this film have made me realize how perfect and emotionally resonant it really was.

Anyway... I need to see it again. But I don't have a lot of questions or ambivalence about what I saw. Again, it's different and challenging and bold. Not all of the shots hit and some miss in big ways. But I'll tell you this... it's the first Star Wars film to make me shed tears. Even my wife said the same and she doesn't give a shit about any of this. When I said, "Wow that was so different and weird for a Star Wars movie!" She said, "Is it?" But she enjoyed it too.

So that's my first impression thoughts. I'm at work now. Sorry if they don't make sense but I just wanted to get something down so I can finally join in the conversation. Now, I'm gonna try to read through the thread.

Also, I don't want to get overly political here but this is exactly the Star Wars film we needed given the stat of politics in the US right now. It was so resonant.

I read an article where they said a young George Lucas would make this film, regarding the risks it took. I think that resonates as a solid affirmation of Rian's vision.

Im Imaxing this shit this week. Should be fun.

Still reeling from what i hated about the movie and what i liked. I do think im getting ready to say goodbye to SW and hello to whatever they do next and put the logo on it. Im ok with that, and im sure eventually i will not care.

But im still here.

i think overall I enjoyed this film, but the things I didn't like - I really didn't like and those are the bits that are sticking with me. I might get around to seeing this again, but if I don't I 'm not too worried

it took me two years to get around to watching TFA a second time. i already have the urge to see TLJ again, because i think it's a better film.

i wanted luke to leave the island and kick ass all movie just like everyone else, but i appreciate the risks the director took to make a funny and emotionally affecting movie, which also happened to look great throughout. we all have our perception of what we want a SW movie to be, but this is a daring movie first and foremost, which may not make it the greatest SW movie, but certainly one of the most intriguing.
