but then you realized that it doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to (a) recognize that the red sox needed an ace, and (b) sign the best-available starting pitcher on the market?

They had the same situation last year and failed to have enough smarts.

but they tried signing jon lester; he just signed elsewhere. and i think they were smart not to sign james shields or throw a 7th year at scherzer. their stupidity was low balling lester before having to deal him to the a's.

That's what happens when Larry Lucchino is making your baseball decisions.

It's hard to criticize the signing...Price was the best available pitcher, he has plenty of AL East experience, the team isn't exactly short on money, and money is all it cost you since the draft pick compensation became negated with the Toronto trade. And as long as he pitches well, he's most likely opting out in 3 years, so the length and total dollar amount may be negligible points. You can criticize them for being in the position of having to do this, but it's hard to criticize them for doing it to rectify past mistakes.

They didn't really actually try to sign Lester, they just tried to make it look like they were to save face. I'm happy with the end result because I'd rather have Price than Lester, but the clusterfucky way they got here was a joke.

for the record, i have no issues with this price signing at all. i think it's completely reasonable. i would rather have price over grienke (who probably signs with the giants or dodgers).

Agreed. While they nailed down the best starting pitcher and closer, this team is still not a World Series contender. More pitching, please.

I'm ok with the rotation as it stands now...I think Eduardo Rodriguez is only scratching the surface of what he can be, I think Porcello will be a lot better now that the heat won't be nearly as much on him to live up to that contract, and you have enough options to have a respectable 4 and 5 starter (Buchholz (who I'd love to trade), Kelly, Johnson, Owens, Miley). Then see where we are at the trade deadline and go after a pitcher then if we're in contention for the playoffs/division. I would like to see them pick up one more veteran bullpen arm, preferably a good left hander.
