science is always questioned. Id just like the questioners to be people who have an in depth knowledge of the subject and have dedicated their life to that subject rather than your aunt ester who read something on a chain email

That only scratches the surface of the problem. Things are even worse than you think. Everyone likes to think they get their information from objective experts - you, me and Aunt Ester. One should realize that the belief that we should only listen to experts - while usually rational - is easily gameable, and the institutions that determine for us who the experts are (the media of one sort or another), as well as the "experts" themselves, can be captured by politically motivated groups. And in fact, this belief was gamed and the institutions captured before social media existed, and before we were even born. One seemingly crazy way to correct this problem might be to sometimes give ideas that our "experts" claim are absurd some consideration. but I'm not really hopeful about any solution.

But arguing over each side's conspiracy theories is a bit off topic. IMO the problem the study is pointing to is that the left has been locked in a purity spiral for over a decade, and dogmatically demands adherence to a narrowing worldview, and anyone who goes against it is cast out of the club, reducing its power in a democracy. The "right" (that is, what has by default become everything that isn't left) has been able to chip away at this rigid gatekeeping (the dam finally breaking in the last couple of years IMO). But rather than causing liberal gatekeepers to expand their coalition, they've just handed all dissenters to the right. I see some tiny signs that people on the left are sick of the gatekeeping and want to overthrow them, but they seem pretty weak at the moment. The Biden campaign debacle, and the CONSPIRACY to keep his mental state a secret for years, should have been a huge wake up call, but yet it seems that I am to be eternally disappointed.

Obviously, a lot of factions on the right would love to make this happen on the right, too - it's an explicit tenet of many of their platforms - but right now they need the coalition too much. In the meantime, there are all sorts of contradictory factions and ideas within the right that have to fight it out. (This is an actual benefit of actual diversity, not the weird, worthless racial-identity concept of diversity of the recent left.) Exciting times! Meanwhile the left, due to rigid gatekeeping, has become locked in stasis because it has too few acceptable ideas with which it can grab from.
