I am in this boat with you. The whole "feel love/from above" stuff has this "put your hands in the air/wave em like you just dont care" cheesiness to it.Leatherhead wrote:The lyrics really hold this one back for me. Which is unfortunate because I really like some of them.

I think this is (no hyperbole) one of the best lyrics in the catalog. longing to belong to something, to feel like you matter, and worrying that you dont, and arent worthy of it, is a central existential human experience. it is what motivates Eddie in Release 30 years ago and has been there ever since. and it is such an efficent and powerfil distillation of that idea.Place E3 wrote:I am in this boat with you. I think its tastes briefly of contemporary christian, and its just enough that it knocks all the wind out of my boner until the preRunning kicks in.

I think I just identified a big difference between you and I when it comes to consuming music -- or rather, specifically, Pearl Jam. This is really interesting and not something I'd even considered this angle.stip wrote:Until Something Special one of the things that Dark Matter does so well is just build constantly. Even comparatively quieter songs like Wreckage move at a clip and end in a big way. People slag on the production, and it can be a lot, but I think part of the 'loudness' contributes to it. The album plays in a way that feels overwhelming at times, but for me that's a good thing. Dark Matter is a lot, but it's a lot in the way that some of those early records just felt huge and importance and all encompassing.
That and the alt country stuff, for me.stip wrote:it's also, to be fair, my favorite lane of pearl jam. Big building catharsis
Oh, yeah. Totally. I dig that too. But I don't often think of the entire album in those terms. That's what I find interesting.stip wrote:it's also, to be fair, my favorite lane of pearl jam. Big building catharsis
Which songs do you think fall into that latter category?RockPusher wrote:That and the alt country stuff, for me.stip wrote:it's also, to be fair, my favorite lane of pearl jam. Big building catharsis
I forget, Spenno, are you a Radiohead fan?Birds in Hell wrote:Which songs do you think fall into that latter category?RockPusher wrote:That and the alt country stuff, for me.stip wrote:it's also, to be fair, my favorite lane of pearl jam. Big building catharsis
Anyway, suffice to say, "big building cartharsis" is definitely not my Pearl Jam lane.
Not a diehard but I like them OK.epilogue wrote:I forget, Spenno, are you a Radiohead fan?Birds in Hell wrote:Which songs do you think fall into that latter category?RockPusher wrote:That and the alt country stuff, for me.stip wrote:it's also, to be fair, my favorite lane of pearl jam.
