i think you hit on something that really appeals to me - the fact that at every point of the song each band member is making a choice - that there is space within the song for them to play, and in a way that reflects the reality of a song being co-constructed around them. THIS is what I wanted, what capturing the live experience means to me, and what the band being in a room together should feel like. this is much more important (to me) then cleaner instrument separation

Some seem under the impression that the problem is PJ turned their amps up too loud and some listeners can't handle it. That's not really the issue. A mid-tempo or even slow song can suffer from this kind of thing. It's a choice in the production, not in the composition. I'd love it if PJ went really heavy, but this kind of production style makes things sound smaller and tinnier, which I'd imagine is the opposite reaction.

The production is what it is; if I discounted every album that had crappy production, the list of albums I like would be much shorter. So far, the problem for me is both songs have some pretty bland songwriting choices (though that's more of an issue w/ Dark Matter than here).

yeah, i agree with the Motorhead reference here. This is something they tried in MYM, with good success, and this time i think its more clear.

LB and BS have the same production values throughout as well. For examples of albums with diverse production elements, I’d look to the Beastie Boys, Beck, Kendrick Lamar’s TPAB…all of which went through the same mastering process to create a cohesive sound.

Trag, I disagree that those PJ albums I mentioned sound that way, regardless of what objective, scientific, observable processes those albums went through, and despite the fact they let you sit in on the sessions

I'm trying not to lose my patience but "that's what mastering does" is a deeply condescending thing to reply to someone who has recorded in studios multiple times (albeit as a musician); at some point I need you to just let someone disagree

You sound like a lunatic. It would be way easier for you to just say “I don’t really get how production works, but some of the songs on BS and LB sound ok to me, and some don’t.”

Eh, after the initial disappointment of "this is the direction they went with for the 2nd single?" wore off... it's a fun enough song I guess (although production choices are not very flattering). It could fit well on the album as a mid-album kick in the pants.
