there's such a charming innocence in these songs. It makes you believe in happy endings

And yet, they were about as cynically manufactured as any of the current pop hits. It helps that with Phil Spector there was a real artistry to the melodies, arrangements and overall production, but at the heart of it there was this egomaniacal wunderkind obsessed with selling records to teenagers.

On the east side of Atlanta sits a large granite outcrop named Stone Mountain. In the summer they hold laser shows there; been doing it since the '80s. When I was about 11 or 12 the family were laid on the lawn on our annual trip to watch the show when they started up Hard Days Night and drew an outline of the foursome. A cheer went up.
My dad booed.
It was a moment of clarity that there would be many culture clashes between us that would come.

Did they drag your dad into the town square and stone him to death or did they just put him in a wicker tower at the top of Stone Mountain and light it on fire?
