Can someone explain something to me? Does ed even try anymore? Sirens is a new song off there new album. They played the song every show and I don't believe Ed has even got the lyrics right once! Not that I am upset about sirens, but you got to me kidding me. And forget even listening to severed hand. He hasn't sang the lyrics right in about 4 years now.

Lots of alcohol, 'I can do anything' ego, and his refusal to succumb to reading glasses onstage to better see his cue cards (they are up there, right in front of him). The 2013 boots are tough to listen all the way through. If/when cherry-picked for compilations, though, there is plenty of gold.

Yea, it does seem like the new songs were the most butchered. You’d think those would be the easiest for him to remember. Although there may be no perfect versions of Sirens, I’m pretty sure there are ones that are a little better than others. Charlottesville is the first that comes to mind, but maybe that’s just because it’s the first one where he does the extended sing-along at the end, which sounded nice in that context since it seemed to be a very spontaneous thing (unlike what happened later in the tour where it became pre-planned). Brooklyn 2 and Philly 2 versions were also decent, IIRC.

There were plenty of good options to choose from for Lightning Bolt (Calgary or Hartford come to mind) and Yellow Moon (Brooklyn 2 was solid). Those were the 2 most consistently performed LB songs on the tour. The best MYM was either Vancouver or Calgary, can’t remember which one now. But the guitars seem to have an extra bite to them and Eddie manages the lyrics well enough. Getaway and MFS? Good luck, few options to choose from. You’d probably have to go with Buffalo for MFS. The lyrics are a mess, of course, but the music seems pretty spot on. I think one of the Philly shows had a pretty solid version of Infallible. (I would’ve chosen Calgary for Infallible, but this was one of the songs where the cymbals seemed to be out of kilter with the rest of the music?) San Diego has my favorite version of Pendulum. Charlottesville for Swallowed Whole. Hartford for Let the Records Play. LA2 for Sleeping By Myself (San Diego starts out very strong but Ed botches the “love and disaster” part, which is unfortunate because it was sounding really good up to that point. I almost prefer the San Diego version despite that mess-up.) I’m not sure about Future Days. I know he’s botches the lyrics in a lot of them, but there are a few where he’s spot on. I prefer the later versions where Boom switches from the clean piano intro (which seems to be used early in the tour) to the dirty organ sound (which I believe he started using at Brooklyn 2 and onward). In fact, now that I think about it, I would probably go with Brooklyn 2 for this one.

You thought of doing a live LB compilation?

Oh I definately know there are nuggets of gold to be found and I have found them. I just got up to LA 1 and after garden, it seems like they just fall apart. I stopped at RVM, it sounded so downtuned I just couldn't take it anymore.

Maybe I need to take a break on boots for a few weeks. I think the thing that really has me annoyed is how does he not know the new songs? You just fucking wrote these songs! What the fuck were you doing in pittsburgh for a week before the tour besides jocking Fanco Harris and some pirates pitcher?

Remember when you could pick any boot from a tour and be blown away by the entire show?

Nevertheless (like you have already stated) it's only Ed's voice which makes the new boots less enjoyable. I dont buy the whole "their approach has changed idea". Ed has always forgotten lyrics, the band has always played rare songs rather sloppy. There are only two differences to older tours (- 2006): First, Ed's voice doesnt have the power anymore to carry a sloppy played song. Second, the tour stops before they get their groove.

The 2000 boots with a 2013 Eddie-voice would be almost equally bad.

I'm of two minds. Yes, the sloppiness and general lyrical butchery from Ed gets rather annoying. But I'm usually swayed in the end by great setlists... and the 2013 tour is loaded with them. The most diverse and interesting setlists that PJ has ever conjured up. Add in the fact that the band is generally tight as hell and firing on all cylinders on most of these shows... and I still consider the 2013 a very likable set. Certainly not the best... but also not deserving the treatment they are getting from most RM'ers. However, I do agree with Lowlight, Ed's butchering of the new songs is perplexing.

Good point. There's some rough ones in there though.

I'm working on one - almost there, just waiting for the rest of the BDO boots to be released. Really hoping that MFS from Adelaide is decent as sadly Buffalo is best of a very bad bunch. Getaway and MYM also sounded good on this tour.

Portland has a great Sirens with correct lyrics btw ;)
(Undecided if I'm going to include the singalong outro - maybe from a different show)

The '05 shows were great, but the bootleg quality is so shitty I can't listen to them! I'd love to see that tour remixed and rereleased in flac
